ML 1 n FORT HE FARMER. Sermon ior Farmers. An J now, farmer?, liave you done jus tice to your profession, to your families, ami to vour country, for the hist year ? To your profession have you cultivated your grounds with all the assiduity and zeal ot which you are susceptible i llav you called to vour aid all the a-rricultura reading within your reach, and taken ad vice from those of your neighbors who are competent to "ive it ? Are your farm generally in a better c-r.idition than they were one year ago 7 Arc your holds Let tcr laul out ana eucloici useless stones . i . 11 removeu your wste jrrounu less your ditches opeued and the geueral suriace ot the ground better adapted for the rais lng of crops ? lias your laud been made richer, to cnabie it to yield more, and have vou collected a large amount of materials ? t increase your :uiuul stock of manure ? Arc your houses more comfortable, besides being of a neater appearance, from the la bors ot the year : Have you added to the conveniences and safety of your bams, to make them better adapted to the purposes lor winch they were built f Again : has your stock of cattle ami horses improved, not only iu number, but more in juanty and appearauce, and con scMiieutly in value ? Have you selected and do you raise the best kinds of sheep we mean those kiuds that are most prof itable to the owner? Have you the best breed of hogs, aud do you carry just so mauy through the winter as best conduces to your interest ? Ia short, have you so farmed in all things that yon have no cause of regret, because you 1iavc given to all a proper decree of attention and care ? If so, we congratulate you ; but if not so if you have not done one, a part or all, of those things, the year has been, in a measure, lost to you, and you have not done justice to your, farm or your profes sion. Take another year of probation, turn it to better account, and let your dili gence give evidence of a thorough refor mation. But if experience cannot teach, and the prospect of harrassiug debts here after cannot incite you to a noble industry you will soon become an evil in a neigh borhood, your example will be injurious to others, and your slothfuluess and un thrifliness will assuredly lay your farm under a cumbersome mortgage ; and this imposed,, the next step is a disposal of it by a creditor at auction. We. turn from such, and ask next, Have you for the last j'ear done your duty to your family ? That is, have you made the labors of the farm as cheerful to all your dependants as circumstances would allow? Have you been so far kind and indulgent as was consistent with the prop er management of a well regulated house hold ? Have you attended to the educa tion of your children and apprentices, and and as far as one short 'ear would allow, given them all the opportunities to acquire information that may be useful to them hereafter in their several pursuits, and that with intelligence they may support the free institution? of our coutry t If you have done this, you have done your duty; but let us at the same time remark, .that education is on the advance; what w;n necessary for our generation, is not enough for them. The march of intellect is onward, and our present attainments are comparitavely small, and all will be still more undervalued, iu advance of the generation to come. Have you done your duty to your coun try ? Have you given the necessary aid that the good of society demands at your hands to the bridges, roads, public im provements in your respective neighbor hoods, to schools, seminaries of learning, public morals, and religious institutions? These are all great and important duties, and a well-regulated community ought not to be slighted or forgotten. Society cannot flourish without them they are the stamina that give stability and health to our country and its government, and that man is unfit for associated life, he is wanting in principle, and reckless of con sequences, who will not lend his aid to the attainment of these great aud impor tant objects. Comforts for Cattle. Good stables, good food, and good water, are the prime comforts fjr cattle in winter. Tor sum mer, whatever else they way have, how can, tlicy get along without a scratching pole L J lev. fcyduey Smith, of England, was somothin ot a farmer, and uil to visit his cattle dailv. and fcd M IP III ! pet them until they knew his voice, aud welcome his coining. He used to do all in his power to make them comfortable. He has been heard to say, "I am for all cheap luxuries, even for animal ; now all animals have a passion for scratching their back bonw; they break down your gates and pailing to effect this. Look ! this is my universal scrateher, a sharp-edged polo, resting on a high, and low post, adapted to every hight from a horse to a lamp. Even the Edinburgh Reviewer can take his turn ; you have no idea how popular it is. I have not had a gate broken since I put it up. I have it in all my fields. Fine Ginuekukkads.
