wortny ol emulation. Wo am sat;Rfi.l
that the Cambrians who served in Mexico,
whether they be dead or living havo
brothers and sons and admirers who are
not ready to let the military spirit die out
entirely in this community. We have the
material here to get up one of the best
companies in the State. Then to work
young men, and raise that company !
Quoits. A matched game of Quoits
was pitched at Wilmore, on Saturday last,
by a somewhat celebrated pitcher of Eb-
ensburg, and a young Welchman, of
Johnstown. The match resulted i
of the Welchman. The test was to be the
best three in five. The score made was
as follows :
Ebensburg,
First game, 21 yards, 14
Second 25 yards, !
Third " 21 yards, 10
Fourth " 25 yards, 14
The purse was said to be $50 ; besides
which, numerous side bets changed hands.
We trust the Ebensburg Cricket Club,
when it enters for a match against the
"All England Eleven," will niakea better
score.
Military Company. Wcaro rcjues
U l t rive cotice that a meeting of cit
uens of Ebensburg and vicinity will be
htM at the Court House, on Saturday
evening next, at G o'clock, for the purpose
taking into consideration the propriety
' -f raising and organizing a military com
uny. We should be pleased if this move
iit should prove successful. Our town
Icen long enough without a military
l'mpany. Johnstown boasts of several,
Md even Hemlock is ahead of us. This
not be. In times cone bv. our
lovrn and vicinity turned out men who did
iae rough fighting for the Stars and
'-iripes, aa the history of the Mexican
i ...
will amply testify. The bone of
luuny of these braves have long since
mmletl with a foreign soil. Eleven years
tai-e rolled past since a few of the gallant
P"U returned to their homes. Some of
'cm arc yet amongst us ; and although
iney nay be tired of "the pomp and cir
tu"'stance of war." and uuv not fl in-

r set by them on that occasion is

The Fair. The Agricultural fairs
which have been held in this place, have
not been so well attendecHrom all parts of
the county as could be desired. On one
or two occasions, several of the districts
were almost wholly unrepresented. We
trust this will not be said of the coming
fair. The 3Ianagers are sparing no pains
or expense to render the most ample ac
commodations to both visitors and exhib
itors, and every locality in the county
should do its part in making the exhibi
tion a full and as varied as possible. If
our friends go into the matter with the
proper spirit, we shall have a fair this fall
which will boalike creditable to our coun
ty and our people.
Senten ced. Ou Saturday evening last,
John Orncr, Jr., George Xagle and Chas.
Weaver, who were severally convicted of
Larceny week before last, were sentenced
by the Court to undergo an imprisonment
for one year in the Western Penitentiary;
and William Xcalies, convicted of receiv
ing stolen goods, was sentenced to six
months' imprisonment in our County Jail.
For some cause which we have not learn
ed, the sentence of Floriuda Brown, also
convicted of Larceny, was deferred until
the next argument court. Orner, Xagle
and Waavor were taken by Sheriff Linton
to the Penitentiary, ou Monday last.
"Special Announcement." ly ref
erence to another column there will be found
the advertisement of Duane Kulison, the
well-known proprietor of the "Quaker
City Publishing House," to which we in
vite the attention of those of our readers
who are possessed with a desire to buy
good and cheap Books. Ia connection
with each Book, the purchaser is presen
ted with a Gift, valued at from 50 cents
to ?.r00. Mr. ltulison has the reputation
of always performing what is down in the
bills and, as a matter of course, the
people have confidence in him.
Serious Accident. We are pained
to learn that Mr. Jerome Dawson, of Al
legheny township, lias lost his right hand.
On Saturday last, whilst engaged on a
saw-mill, he was about removing some
chips from a log that was being sawed,
when the circular saw caught hi.s hand
and instantly cut it off. It was thought
that amputation above the wrist would be
necessary to save his life. 31 r. Daw
son is a millwright by occupation, and is
a most estimable man. We tender him
our sympathy in this sad visitation.
The Great Show. As will be seen
by reference to our advertising columns,
we arc to have a gigantic Circus and Ma
nacrie here on the Gth of next inonth.
If we may judge from the bills, this exhi
bition will surpass anj thing of the kind
we have witnessed in this "neck of
woods" for a long time. Many persons
object to attending the Circus, but when
it contains a collection of the wonders of
the animal kingdom, everybody has a
good excuse to go, in the fact that they
desire to "see the elephant."
Died. On Sunday last, in Ebensl mrrr.
, - 2 J
Ebenezer Davis, aged about 78 years.
The deceased was a native of Wales, and
had served many years in the British ar
my. His trade here was that of a weav
er, and avc have often thought, as we
passed his place of business, that he was
one of the most perfect models of industry
we have ever seen. Late and early his
loom was in operation. He was retired in
his habits, and unassuming in his man
ners. Peace to his ashes !

Glganlic Circus and ITIaiiagcric,
COMBINED WITU THE EXHIBITION OF
SANDS, NATHANS & CO.'S
Performing Elephants, Anton; and Cleopatra.
fJlIIS unique and mammoth establishment
I combines a greater number of attractions
than were ever before ottered to the public.
The Performing Elephants, Antony ami Cleo
patra, are the same which, for mouths, trea
ted the greatest furore in London or Paris,
while more recently their performances were
the theme of universal admiration for months
at the Hroadway Theatre, New York. Their
wonderful docility, and the perfection of their
training, make them the mo?t interesting spe
cimens of the animal creation that the world
has ever seen. All their faculties have been
developed to the greatest extent, and they
stand for sci geneuis, the most remarkable of
their kind. They stand upon their head, play
upon Musical instruments, ascend Inclined
Plaaes, and go through all the positions of
the most Accomplished acrobats.
In addition, Bailey & Co.'s Circus and Ma
nagerie comprises a collection of WILD ANI
MALS, including Lions, Tigers, Hears, Leop
ards, Hyenas, Panthers. Ostriches, etc., beside
a large and varied collection of the Monkey
tribe, and a rare variety of the most beautiful
Tropical Uirds.
The troupe of Riders, Vaulters, Lady Eques

oughly artistic now traveling in the United
States, and comprises the following distin
guished names :
Mdme. LOUISE BUI30IS, from the Cirque
Parisian.
M. SANDS, the great Principal Rider.
E. W. PERRY, the best Four Horse Rider
in the World.
S. I5URT,the Wonderful Protean Equestrian.
LA IJELLA ISABELLA, the Sylph of the

G. SLOMAN, in his great Globe Act, upon
horseback, will execute a variety of extraor

THE CLOWNS, WARD & BOOKER,
are the very embodiment of Fun and'3ocular
ity. Their jokes are numerous, fresh, spicy,
and piquant, full of hits at the times and fol
lies of the day, j et entirely free from anything
which the most delicately constituted mind
could take the slightest exception to. Bailey
& Co.'s Exhibition, therefore, comprises Ele
gant Horsemanship, a splendid Managerie,
Slack Rope Performance, new Singing, Comie

Thb Ameiucax Brass Bash, composed of
picked musicians accompanies the exhibition,
