An Uniikvltiiv House. A d irk l.ou-c
-is always an unhealthy house ; always an i 11
"ired house, always a dirty house. Want of
ght stops growth, and promotes scrofula,
ickets, etc., among children. People I s?
heir health in an unhealthy house, and if
hey get ill they cannot get well again in it.
Three, out of many negligences and ignor
ances in managing the health of houses gen
erally, I will here mention as specimen: First
that the female head in charge of any build
ing does not think it necessary to visit every
hole and corner of it every day. Second,
that it Is rot considered essential to air, to
mn, and io clean rooms whn uninhabited.
Third, one window is considered enough to
' air a room.
How to Freshen Salt Fisit. Many
persons who are in tho hahit of freshening
rnackcral or other gait fi-h, never dream
that there Lsa right and a wrong way to do
- it. Any one who has seen the jnwess of
evaporation going on at the saltworks, kno w
that salt falls to the bottom. Just so it i.s in
the pan "where your inackeral lie.-j soaking ;
and as it lied with the skin and side down,
the salt falls to the bottom of tho pan, and
the fish comes out freshened as it should ; in
the other case it h nearly as salt as w hen put
in. If you do not believe thii test the matter
for yourselves.
Wno should have a good garden if not
the farmer? He has plentp of land, team,
and as much manure as ho can ?pare. There
is no class of people to whose families a gar
den is a greater convenience or more press
ing necessity, than the fanning class. He
moved far from that access to a daily mar
ket which makes up for tlie want of a gar
den to town and city residents, the fanner's
household must do without fresh vegetables
and fruits unless they are home-produced.
Without a garden, the winter diet is main
bread, meat, and potatoes.
Selecting Sheep. The approved form
in sheep is general roundness of shape and
fineness of bone. The chest should be broad,
the ribs well arched, the back and loins broad
flat and straight ; the limbs should be short
in proportion to the body, the head small,
. the ears thin, the skin soft and elastic, the
wool soft to the touch, thick, and coining
well forward to the face, but not covering it.
Sheep-RAjsino. The IMaine Fn-mcr
says that II. G. Abbott, of North Ya.sal
br.ro', has for several years been making ex
periments in sheep-rearing, in the effort to
obtain a medium breed between the Spanish
and natives, so as to combine a good quality
of wool with mutton, each point being about
