Build Houses. Our town needs now,
more than anything ele, an increase oi

our mechanics and laborers can purchase,
and thus put their earnings and savings into
permanent form. We have the men of cap

disposed, meet tbi3 demand for houses. We
call upon our business men to unite and
build homcs fur each to build one, two or

their business.
EST Bad Luck. The fates geera to le
after Mr. Boggs Smith, of Selinsgrove. A
ew weeks ago he went to Philadelphia and
purchased a stock of faland winter good?.
On their way hither, the car in which they
were being transported took fire somewhere
above Reading, and all the goods belonging
to Mr. Smith, Mr. Glover and other parties
in that county, were consumed. Mr. Smith
immediately returned to Philadelphia and
made a re-purchase, and his goods were
agian shipped, but unfortunately were on
the flat that sunk in the river, near that
place, the other day. Lycoming Gazette.
We notice that a large number ofonr
exchanges have suspended publication this
week. At one time we contemplated doing
the same thing, but after fully consulting
our better judgment in the matter, conclud
ed not to suspend during the holidays. It
would have been a saving to us of 552.25 in
cash and no considerable loss to each" sub

tracted with our patrons to furnish them
with a paper, weekly, and they expect us to
do so, unless prevented by circumstances
over which we have no control. Our exnen-

those are expenses that are perpetual, and
the euspmsion of a week, in the eourse of a

importance, hence the crowded state of our

our Town and County, so that each issue of
the paper will afford a pleasing certificate
of its prosperity and enterprise. .
VJ' Christmas Times and Sleighing Par
ties "ain'tas they used to was" ten or fifteen
years ago, when whiskey the best, was five
cents a glass, (with a segar thrown in,) and
when a good horse and sleigh could be had
all night for two dollars. Fifty cents used to
be the established price for a ride to Berwick
and back(in parties,) and a good supper
could be had for three levvics. For a two
dollar note a fellow could take his sweet
heart to Danville, and enjoy a whole night's
frolic and fun, and the livery man and the
hotel keepers made more money than they
do now. To go through the same folly now,
spoilt the face of a ten dollar greenback.
The consequence is, the young men save
their change and the girls don't go a sleigh
ing not much. Oh, for the good old Dem
ocratic times.
