agricultural: - RANDOM HE2IARK3. ... . ,.7e Bayer remember th winter grain to lock better than it does now. It has .come cp remitkaMy even and has the rery best of color, We have not yet seen a fielA that was cot put ia with the drU, thus securing for the seed a good depth aild enabling it to be firmly rooted against the freezing and tha'sring process which in seme of our change able winters takes place. In consequence of the drill the wheat crop in eastern Pennsyl vania and no doubt everywhere else has be come a much more certain crop. TVe are often surprised at the dilatoriness cf some farmers in removing their corn from the field. In many places we see it stand ing from the time it is cut in September to the middle of November. By this time the cars frequently becomo mouldy by rains and the fodder utterly ruined. Cattle and even horses eat the fodder with avidity, prefer ring it to second-crop hay, and by steaming it and mixed with a little Indian meal, the whole, stalks and all, are greedily consumed. Tet we see this Valuable provender remain exposed to the weather until it is worthless. c. Plows, harrows, rollers, wagons, wheel barrows, &c. are frequently exposed to the weather for weeks and even months, while places of shelter are close at hand. They suffer more injury from this exposure than from half- a year's use. And there isno oth er excuse for this than a plea of a want of time, which every gosd farmer will say is no excuse at all. Before the winter closes in there should be a thorough examination of all the frnces, gates, doors of the stable, &c It will be found to be a great saving if everything is put in good order now. A rotten post, a rail with one end down, a broken hing3 of a gate or door, will not get any better by al lowing them to remain unrepaired. The post will go down, the rail will disappear, the broken hinge will be increased to two, and so on, everything will be getting worse, and the expenses of repairing will be double. Germantoicn Telegraph. . Crib Brrrxo. Cribbing is undoubtedly a habit rather than a disease. This, it would seem, is proved by the, fact that a young horse confined ia a stable next to an old horse who is a cribber, will soon acquire the habit It is very common among horses that are constantly kept in a stable and may be caused by the animal siezing upon crib "biting as a solitary pastime, to while away the tiresome hours of stable life. Or the constant diet of hay or oat3 may derange the digestion, causing as we ourselves well know uneasiness. Or the long continued inhalation of close and impure air may dis order that, part of the body which is the most sympathetic of the entire system, and thus give rise to the habit Cribbing may be prevented if taken in hand -during its early Ltages. First attend to the atmosphere of the stable, rendering it pure by careful ventilation. Place a lump of rock salt in the manger. This acts as a stimulant to the stomach, and will often enable the horse's digestion to recover its lost tone. If this does not effect a "cure add to it a large piece of chalk. Should this prove to do no good, damp the food, and at each time of feeding sprinkle magnesia upon it Mayhew also recommends a handful of ground oak bark to be given with each feed of grain. Should none of the above measures prove of benefit, we should come to the conclusion that the disease was of more a obstinate nature and should treat as in chronic indigestion. Maine farmer. Swiss Fabjuno. New-England is some times called the Switzerland of America. HoTreTer striking may be the similarity of the scenery, there most be, ire think, quite a dirersity in the habits of the people, judg ing from the following account by "Carle ton" of theSwiss styleof "getting up wood," "going to mill' and "making hay." In approaching Mont Blanc, he says: "We maet a woman with a great basket strapped opon her back filled with faggots; another one passes us on her way to mill, her "grist',' in a bag lying on her shoulders and a strap from the bag crossing her forehead. In a field opposite a third woman is mowing. She stops to sharpen her scythe, and we hare an opportunity to inspect the implement ' No bushwhacker in the United States no .farmer's boy in all the Union swlrjgs so heavy scythe sixteen inches long, four "wide and thick enough, for the track of the Metropolitan horse railroad. A man with a ' three-tined wooden fork tosses up the grass , to the em which the "weakeT vessel" is mow ing. "While watching the operation in the . field, a damsel passes C3 with a wash-tub on her head. No grenadier of the grand army , cf France ever stood more erect She is busy with her knitting-work the while." Sxow FRrrrEE3. Why ? Make a lather thick batter of flour, milk, and a little salt Add for each pint of milk used, a tea cupfull of newly fallen snow, and, at once drop the batter into fat previously made hot Eat with sugar, flavored with lemon juice. . These directions have come so often, and from so many different sources, that there seems to be something in them, though one would suppose the pure snow could be no .better than an equivolent cf water. Prob ably the air carried in by the porous snow and distributed all through the cold batter by stirring, is retained sufficiently to pro ifcice lightness, a3 the hot fat instantly crusts over the outside. This looks plausible, and the recipe can be easily tried when the snow comes. Success will depend upon having the fat ready hot, and cooking before mil Eons of little air bubbles can unite and es cape. Stans Ptxtkins.'
