He-ia one of the kindest men living ; and, by the way, is one of the lest Justices of the Peace .in this County. " Long may he wave." . A Word to our Patrons. We are not given to dunning, but are compelled to no tify our patrons that, we need funds. Over nine months have passed since the consoli dation of the DzmCCRAT and Star, and out of some fifteen hundred subscribers, not four hundred have paid us fcr the present volume which terminates on the 22d of Feb: ruary next It ia rather an- expensive busi ness to print a newspaper these times, with paper at 22 to 28 cents per ft., ink ranging at 40 cents to $1,00 per pound, and wages, per week, from $14.00 to 16. 00. Of course, we have high taxes, rent3 and licenses, to pay in addition, which all goes to make our business rathet an'expcnsive one ; besides everything that we consume we are obliged to pay cash for, - Our paper bills alone run . over one hundred doUart per month, eay nothing about the ether contingent expen ses. Did our patrons know what it costs us to publish our paper they would not be in the least surprised t see in each umber a polite request to all who know themselves in debted to uSy to come forward and liquidate the same. Next week being Court,- we ex tend an invitation to aU tcho have not paid us far the present , volume, to come and pay the amount of their subscription, or send the sacaa with their neighbor. We hesitate not a moment in saying that, hundreds of our subscribers "will heed this notice. The Dem ocrat ajo Star is a welcome visitwf, we know, to nearly two thousand people in this county, and they are not going" to permit this organ to be in want No I not they 1 We cannot visit our friends for the purpose of eoliecticg our dues but must depend oa their , fcrfbjlsT their subscriptions to us." Gerritaon, Esq., editor of the Montrose Democrat, has been appointed Assessor of Revenue for this district We feel like congratulating our brother "quill" upon his good fortune, (that is if the office is & paying one) for it is sel dom that an editor receives any such dis tinction at the hands of .the ,; powers that be." He is prepared to furnish any kind of stove, from a small par lor stove to a huge cooking stove, gas-burners or otherwise. Tin-ware of every de scription can be had at his establishment, made up in the best kind of workmanship, cheap for cash. Give hini a calL - Market Prices. The price of bread stuffs, meat, &c, is bound to come down it can't long remain so high. Already there is a decline in the price of pork and beef. The former has been, and is selling all about us, at from 8 to 10 cents per pound, and beef we notice is quoted, in New York City, as ranging from 9 to 15 cents per pound. There is no reason, in our opinion, why these articles should command such outrageous prices as they have been for the past four or five years. Now that the war is over, and the country in comparative peace, the price of articles of living and of clothing should fall back to their former reasonably low rates. Our dealers in groceries, provender, &c., as well as our butchers should lower their scale of prices. SSL. We would direct the attention of our readers to an article on the second page of to-day's paper, headed "A Ileview of an Old Subject," from the La Crose Democrat. It explains the workings of the Philadel phia Convention in a truthful and logical manner, completely exposing the folly of an attempt to affiliate with the "Bread-and- Butter-Men," and in so doing perform a master stroke of "policy." Read the arti cle, and see whether it does not apply to a few Democrats in this County who were over-Conservative and willing to become time-servers and throw principle? to one-side. This the true Democracy will never agree to do. You must be Democrats if you would ever succeed in routing the eneiny.. m m Thanks. We acknowledge the receipt of a copy of the Democrat and Star, pub lished atBloomsburg Pa., the place of spend- i ing many of our boyhood day?. As acoun- j ty paper we find none to excel it. In read- j ing its columns, it awakens a desire within I us to return and visit the many friends and j acquaintances formed in our youthful days. Our thanks are due for your favor.
