CSy The ripe-layers, who want to divide
the. Democratic Party, in Columbia County,
have not ycf, Tso, far as .we have learned,
bought out the Columbian." That""mer
checna"! still "drags its slow length along.
Altho it is Copper-bottomed, it is not iron-clad-r-not

it to. suit even the vitiated taste of the few

. 3? As everybody in Bloorasburg knows,
Capt. Moorej of the Columbian, is a gentle
man ; but he should not allow such blas
phemy as appeared in" his last papeffand
to which we have called attention, elsewhere,
labour present r issue, under the head of
"blasphemy." As for Dr.. John, of the
Republican, his sentiments on the subject
of Christianity are well known, and nothing
better could be expected from ; a paper pub
lished by him. The CohmiLian should be
more choice in the selection of its company.
SStF We notice in the late Berwidc Ga
zette, an account of the death of a young col
ored .woman" by the name "of Leah .Ann
Branch, of that plr&e, by drowning. : It
seanthat she went to get a bucket of water
from a spring situated near the , canal,' and
through some cause, it is' supposed she fell
from a flight of steps, which descend the
bank leading to the spring, into the canal and
. was drc wned before assistance could be rcn
. lered. tThe body was found but a short dis
tance from the place where she tell in the
water. " She waa married the day before her

Lac (Wisconsin) Reporter say3 that in 1865
Fon du Lac County produced 852,378 bush
els oats, 524,323 bushels corn, 285,250 bush

Collision. On Monday night, as Rich
ard Hullihen's carriage was returning home,
it was struck by a locomotive at tho Mil
street crossing, une or the horses, a very
valuable animal, was killed, and the carriage
was left a perfect wreck. None of those in
the carriage were hurt. Young Ilullihen
y is caught on the cow-catcher and carried
some distance. Montour American.
ESS" The editor of tho Rcpvbjian of this
place would have his readers believe that ha
feels jubilant over what he calls "the strife"
between the Pipe-layers and the Bri
gade." . The truth is, ho looks upon the
ripe-layers with a good deal of suspicion,
for the effect of the new paper the second
edition of the Columbian will be more se
riously felt by him. ' The new paper mav
more mongrelized.and penetrate and sea..
your ranks at a fearful rate. It's well enough
for you to keep up a big noise, for you arc
soon to enter the woods. .
t5 Wc are informed that the malcon
tents, of this place, or in other and more
appropriate words, the omce-seekers from
the Tabernacle, who contemplate the start
ing of a new paper, at the County Seat, one
that will display a huge quantity of brain
and a superior quality of ivisdom, are about
to offer premiums to each and every subscri
ber. This will do. If you can't hmnbucr
the people to take your paper with words
perhaps you " can with some bogus trash.
Will they try it.
Time. As the waves of the ocean roll
upon the winding beach, curious yet well
formed shells, which many are glad to treas
ure up, so the waves of time, as they wa.sh
the shores of earth, bring with them pre
cious and glittering bits of wisdom ; and
those who anxiously stroll upon these shores
in quest of Buch valuables, are rejoiced to
pick them up, that they may stow them
away upon the shelves of their minds for fu
ture use.
Country Roads. Such as have not al
ready been put in good condition for winter
should be seen to at oace. The principal
point now is draining. The "breakers"
should be 'repaired, bo as to carry off the
water and keep the bed dry. , Side . drains
should also' be thoroughly opened Stone
"bridging" may be smoothed with gravel at
this season as well as any other. These
hint", if carried out, will inure much to the
comfort of all using the roads, and savo to
the farmer in horse Cesh, wagons and, tem
per. -
Modern Fashions. A young "lady'a
from the country, now employed in a New
York hoop skirt factory, h said to have writ
ten to a friend a letter from which the fol
lowing is extracted : - - .
"As for thelo necs, the Ioeritisthe more
