RAILROAD DOORS FOR BARNS.
Ttese door3 ara far superior to the old
fashioned doors, which revolve on hinges.
They are oper?d and closed by means of a
rail and sever j small iron trucks securely
attached to the top, and are so constructed
as not only to close the door effectually
Rgainst the ingress of rain, snow and cold
air, but to be very durable and, in every re
rpect, efficient. Large doors are formed by
-one inch matched boards, placed perpendic
ularly, and crossed by matched strips of the
tame in a diagonal direction, or from corner
to corner on both sides. These steps are so
put-on as to represent the sheathing often
eeen on fine houses, being about eix inches
in width, and covering the entire, surface.
It will be seen at once that three thicknesses
of matched boards, securely nailed and thor
oughly painted, besides being so hung as to
obviate effectually all possibility of sagging,
as is the case with doors of ordinary con
struction and workmanship when hung in
"the usual way, must secure an article of
great efficiency md -of an almost indestruct
ible character. The labor of opening and
closing thesa doors may be performed by the
merest boy, and in windy weather they are
not slamming and endangering not only their
own fastenings and fixtures, but the lives,
aLio, of all by whom they are approached.
The old fashion of placing the trucks at the
bottom ia anything but desirable, as the for
mer is liable to become clogged by snow and
ice, bat when it is placed at top, no obstruc
tion' can possibly intervene from this source ;
the door glides easily along the rail, and nev
er requires to be forced open by main strength.
Small doors and tie-ups, theds, out-houscs
and other similar buildings, are constructed,
in a similar way. They are much cheaper
than panel doors, to which they are prefer
able for all purposes where strength and
durability are admired. Germantotcn Tel
egraplu Fattening Fowls All summer lonj
the farmer and his family have fussed with
the poultry : the young chickens need care
in the long rain storms, and protection
against nocturnal depredators. Just as they
are fully grown and out of danger, the
shrewd huckster makes his appearance, buys
fattens, and prepares them for market, and
packets the profits for hi3 smartness.
Obviously the farmer had better fatten
his fowh and send them to market himself.

such the farmer would find plenty greedy

English and Fkxcii Horses. Eng
lishmen are justly proud of their horses.
The superiority of their breeds of race and
draft horses has long been admitted by oth
er nations Indeed, the French and Ital
ians, Germans, Prussians, &c, have been
for more than a century among the best
customers of the English breeders. This
has been ascribed to peculiarities of climate,
by some, but agricultural writers generally
find a sufficient cause for the great excellence
cf English horses in the care and skill of the
British farmer, in respect to selection, rear
ing and feeding. "By these means," says
Hr. William Percival, a lecturer and writer
of note, "we have progressed from good to
better, losing sight of no subsidary help,
until we have attained perfection in horse
flesh unknown in the whole world beside."
With such claim to acknowleged superiority
in breeds, the late victories of French horses
en English ground have been exceedingly
xaartifying to English pride,
A Hint in Breeding. 3Ir. Torr, the
