APPLYING 3IANUEES.
It may, perhaps, appear to some rather
out of plico to talk of manure at this eeason.
It is, however, a subject of too much practi
cal importance, to bo really out of place at
any season. Farmers arc not always over
attentive to those matters, upon the careful
consideration cf which the future product
iyeness of their farms depends, and I shall
therefore offer no apology or excuse for giv
ing their remissness and inattention a 'gen
tie jog", it this time, by way of an awake-
cnr.
"A etitch in time eaves nine," says the old
adae. ' Every one must be aware that in
order to succeed in agricultural efforts, one
.must necessarily understand something of
the philosophy of manures ; and I would ob
serve tLi y object at this time is far less
to embody speculative opinions and theor
ies, than to arouse attention to certain phil
osophical principles, as illustrated by famil
iar results, in the practice of individuals to
tvhom the investigation of these principles,
and their exposition, have been subjects of
patient and long pursuit The really little
accurate knowledge we possess at present on
this all-important topic, must oierate as a
powerful incentive tonewefforts, rather than
as a sedative; and the little we have learned,
whether by dint of actual practical experiment
or by the ritings of others, can only be pro
ductive of the bestresults, when it is permit
ted to excite an interest, and to arouse the
understanding to a full and just appreciation
of the extent we have yet to learn.
The world abounds with therories, and to
Bift the true from the suppositious and rad
ically false, i3 the task imposed by necessity
upon all who would behold their efforts pros
perous, and their labors crowned with suc
cess. It is time that we arouse from these d re ams !

we would progress upon principles of gobcr
reason and philosophy if we hope ever to
Bee ourselves successful in the prosecution
of not only the most ancient, but the niot
honorable and the most useful, alo, of all
human employments, and which has, in
every age, constituted the basis of national
prosperity and glory, wherever civilization
has diffused its kindly beams, Reason and
Philosophy must direct our course and the
method of its pursuit
While one labors to build up or remodify,
another, equally sanguine, perhaps, in the
truthfulness of his own system, is as assidu
ously laboring to pull down ; and hence it
is that notwithstanding the discrepancies of
"philosophers" and the opposing nature of
their "creeds," which, as we become ac
quainted with all, deter us from adopting
any of them, in detail, we haveyet amid the
brick and mortar, enough perhaps of adapt
ed material to erect and finish what may be
a consistent and valuable edifice of our own.
On this subject my advice to every one is
look well before you leap ! adopt no system
without candid consideration ; consult the
minutes of your own and your neighbors ex
perience, and when an experiment has prov
ed successful, whether sanctioned by theor
ies or not, let.it bo tested on a limited scale
at first, preparatory to its adoption or rejec
tion, as it may subsequently appear to de
Eerve. It is not always the case that an ex
periment which has been attended with good
results on one species of soil or crop, or in
one season, will prove equally so when the
circumstances are varied. Hence opinions
predicted upon data thus obtained, are not
safe, and are as likely to mislead as to di
rect aright It is only oft-repcated and uni
form results that ought to satfy us in suth
matters ; and hence the importance of pre
serving study and observation, and of candor
in conducting all experimental efforts tend

. .KEEPING APPLES IN .WINTER.
At tho last State Fair in this city, Delos
Randall had on exhibition Russet Apples
grown ayearago. These apples were plump,
fresh and of good flavor, quite as good as
the same kind of apples are ordinarily ou
the approach of spring. We inquired a3 to
"the manner of keeping, and were informed
that the apples were put up in refuse boxes
obtained at the groceries, and in the follow
ing manner : A layer of dry saw-dust was
sprinkled at the bottom of the box. and then
a layer of apples placed in it so that they did
not touch each other. Upon these was pla
ced a layer of saw-dust, and so on until the
box was filled. The boxes after being pack
ed in this way were placed on a wall in the
cellar, up from the ground, where they kept,
perfectly retaining their freshness and flavor,
until brought out and exhibited at the Fair,
lie say3 that he has kept apples in this way
gome months later than the time named.
s From experiments made with dry saad,
packing the apples in the same way, he finds
that saw-dust is much superior to tho sand,
the latter, he thinks, being too heavy a ma
terial, and pressing the apples too much,
causing them to decay more rapidly than
with the saw-dust. The above experiment,
perhaps, may be,suggestive to those desiring
to preserve apples late in the season of the
nexyear.
It will be needless to remark, perhap?,
that no apple will keep late, by any process
cf packing, that has been bruised or injured
in picking. Apples should be handled care
fully, andthe less moving aljput, after hav
ing been picked, tho better. A large part
c the fruit grown and sold in market, has
been so injured by careless gathering, pour
ing intxbarrels and rouph handlingwhile be
ing driven to market, that it soon decays,
under whatever treatment it may be subject
ed for the purpose of keeping. Utica Her

packing apples. My experience is that ap
ples should be kept in a dry building until
quite cold weather; then very carefully pick
ed over and headed in an air-tight barrel
and removed to acoolcellar. They will keep
better than any other treatment I have ever
tried. A cellar for keeping fruit should be
well drained, but should not have the bot
tom, made of hydraulic -cement. Cement
