AGBICULTDUAL. PULVlirjZATION OFXIIU SOIL. Host farcers sn tv JI aware of the excel lsnt eT?ct.i re.-:;'::-:' 3 from a ticrocsL pulver ization of tLo soli lefors sowing or planting tic-irseetJ. It was tle opinion of the cele brated Jvtbro Tall, that good crops: migit te produced frora a soil for an indefinite per iod, simply by maintaining the earth in a finely pulverized etate, thereby facilitating the expansion of the roots in every direction in quest ef food ; and notwithstanding the fallacy of lila deductions so far a3 regards the mere efUcacy of pulverization without the assistance of other physical means, - no one tan doubt the very great, I had almost caid indispensable, necessity of the thoroughly commingling the soil we intend to crop. A very considerable proportion of the actually available fertility of every soil is derived from the atmosphere, by which it becomes im pregnated or imbued with fructifying gases the legitimate action of which, under cer tain circumstances, and the laws of a well-bal, anced economy, are so indispensable in the primary development and final maturation cf the plant. That such is the case i3 easily demonstrated by the rapid acquirement of the fertilizing principles by soil taken from great depth, and. exposed, on the surface where the action of the atmosphere is unin terrupted, and which occurs in the case of cand thrown from cellars and wells. In a few seasons such a soil becomes covered with a dense and luxurious vegetation, even when no effort has been made on the part of man to aid or forestall the operations cf nature. : This results in part from the absorbtion of ' fertilizing gases, and from the solution of soluble silicates, under the action of certain agents of a strictly atmospheric character, It is frequently remarked by practical agri- j culturists, that soil thrown from ditches, ce! I lars, wells and other deep excavations, be I comes, in a few years, remarkably prolific i under cultivation ; and this is what might be : reasonably expected, as the soil in its primi- tive position was below the range of vegeta- tion, and consequently its soluble silicates ' have never been exhausted by supporting I vegetable life ; but on being brought to the I surface, exposed to the pulverulent action j of the plow and the chemical and mechani j cal action of the atmosphere, they become immediately available, and exert a most po- tent and beneficial influence upon crops of ! every discription, and for a . considerable ; length of time. ; Of the many substances imbibed by the j soil, the most important as well as valuable, ; perhaps, so far as regards its action on living j plants, is ammoniacal gas, and which being ; copiously involved wherever large quantities of animal manure are used, or permitted to i ferment and decompose in a free atmosphere, f is greedily absorbed by the soil. But the i capacity of the soil to absorb this principle j is always in a direct ratio to its fineness, its ; prosperity, and the minute disintegration of j the granules of which it i3 composed. If the j surface is soli3, or presents large isolated lumps, or if it is compactly and finely trod- den, the absorbtion is slow and slight. The more thoroughly therefore we stir and mix , the soil, the more copious, of course, will be ! the influx of fecundating matters from the air, and the more permeable will be the soil ' to the roots cf the plants by which it is to be taken up. No toil that has not recently 1 been broken up, can be worked too much, j for the more we plow and harrow, the more certain shall we be of a crop. 1 In gardens the effect of thorough pulver- ization are more favorably and obviously j evinced than in field culture, where less at- tention and labor are bestowed. Qne great J reason, probably wby so many failures are experienced from tho non-germination of the i smaller kinds of seeds, it is to be found in 1 the very imperfect manner in which the soil , is prepared for their reception. The min ; uteness of many seeds almost invariably in j Eures their destruction, if sown in soil of a j coarse quality. : The moisture contained in the earth in- sures the germination of the seed, tut the I least circumscription of the fluidified pubu 5 lam. after this process has commenced, and j before the development of the plumule and ; rofitel has sufficiently progressed to either j enter deeply below its primary position or to extend above the surface, proves almost im mediately fatal, .the nascent plant withers,. xnd if it does not actually die, it experiences LfetultiScation and emasculation, of energy ; from which it never wholly recovers and re mains sickly and dwarfed till it3 death. Let any person who is at all skeptical concerning the correctness of this doctrine, submit it at ! once to the ordeal of experiment, and he will . find the reasonings herein advanced amply corroborated by the result. ' ,, . Although the utmost degree of pulverizar tion which it is possible to secure, will not insure fertility to a radically poor soil, with out tb.9 assistance and conjoint action of oth er accessories, yet it will be found to aug ment the productive capacities of the rich est and most fertile lands: Soils reduced to -reat fineness, are also much more easily till ed and managed than those of coarser texture rrranuso acts with greater energy upon them, ,nl the crops are always more forward and 2ss liable to blight, mildew and rust Ger :mntotcn TdegrapJu - Hot and sultry are the days of this month niT the firmer has nowreaped some of the "mits of hi3 toD, and should turn his , atten lon to a general clearing up and improve ment of the soil for the next year's crop. rjCt all work be done thoroughly.
