THE QUESTION Q-F MANURE. -In
all t! br - hcsof agriculture,,tbere
perhaps particular one which causes such
a great-dliTorcnca of opinion, both in the
theory ani practice aa ..the'. formation and
careof manuro. : Some prefer one mode of
preservation and some another ; but all agree
upon one point, tiz that it ; should be well
eheltered from the eun and rain. The best
method of attaining this point is the subject
of various discussions and disputes., -
If manure ia allowed to lay aa it was form
ed in the yard until epring, and then thrown
into heaps under shelter, it Is liable to heat
and "fire fan,'-' and in this- way- lose; more
ia value than was gained by eheltcr from the
gun and rain. ' t "','.. ; . I ..
Some contend that the better plan is to al-.
low the manuxe to remain as it was formed
until .spring, and as soon; as the cattle are
t.h straw.-
lUTUCVl UUli w aoi-ui s
or earth. Those who adopt the latter plan
argue that if no water is allowed to escape;
from the yard, .the rain will, by keeping tie
manure moist, benefit it. '-, Their argument
is that if the water cannot escape by any oth
er outlet than that of evaporation it cannot
carry with it any of the valuable portions of
tne manure. ... . .... -t.-.
But it has been clearly proven that when
manure is exposed to the atmosphere there
ia a waste of its essential parts in the form of
gases, and that this waste is only at or near
the surface, where the manure comes in eoir
' tact with the air. " When the maniac is al
lowed Co remain spread" oj,r the yard, as it
wasformed, there is a large amount of sur
face, and consequently a large amount of
waste, in the form of gases. -It is therefore
to our interest to collect our manure into such
piles a3will eipose the smallest amount of
gurface in proportion to theircubical contents
and still farther to prevent loss, to cover the
pile with earth or sods. ' 'But' in doing this
we must use care to prevent the manure from
attaining too great a degree ofheat, and thus
defeating our aim. - f
The best plan is to throw it "under the
sheds during the winter, and thus make the
cattle pack it down as the season advances
by this plan we avoid all danger from ''fire
fanging.'- When the last of the manure Is
thus thrown up, the whole heap may be cov
ered with earth or eod, and thus there will
be but very little waste of gaseous partides,
whicn constitute a very vaiuaoie puruuu ui
all manure. , , i . . . ... , -
It is a common practice with some . lo use
common plaster or gypsum as an absorbent
for the gases, which issue from their manure
heaps. That it acts (under certain condi-
Hons; aa an aosorDent, cannoiDe aemeu, uui
whether it benefits the person who applies
it, is entirely another question. If we 1 take
fresh manure from a horse stable which has
not been cleaned out for a week or two, and
tramp it into a pile as solid as possible, after
covering it with plaster we will find ammonia
will no longer be given off, and we would at
once be led to suppose thatwe were saving
go much of what would otherwise be lost to
our manure head ; but if we carry the exper
iment a little farther, I think we will fitd
that the absorption, like the Irishman's si
prise, will bo "the other way." ' -
If to carry out the experiment we allow
the manure and plaster to remain for a month
or two, we will find that it will begin to give
off ammonia, because plaster will only act as
an absorbent in the presence of moisture,
and when that moisture has evaporated will
give off the gases absorbed. ; Those who ap
ply plaster to the floors of their horse stables
with th5 view of promoting the health and
comfort of theirhcrses may attain this result
but when applied as an absorbent of ammonia
it is of little use unless the manure is after
ward kept moist or damp. ;
Farmers differ materially as to the mode
fjid time of applying their manure, but by
far the greater number allow it to remain in
the barnyard all summer, and spread it on
the oat stubble in the fall, in" oicbr that it
may be turned under for the wheat crop.
A few haul the manure out on the - toi in
the spring, and plow it under for the corn
crop ; those who practice this plan argue that
by this turning the manure under they avoid
the waste of its most valuable portions which
must take place if it is kept in the yard all
summer. The manure not having advanced
far in thestate of decomposition, does not
benefit the corn crop much and as the decom
position goes.cn much more slowly when it
is buried in the ground than when it is in the
yard, it doe3 not much affect the, out crop,
but comes into the proper stage of decom
gition in time for the wheat and g; ass crops.
There is also a great variety of opinion as
to the proper depth for plowing when turn
ing under manure," but I believe that most cf
pur scientific agriculturists' agree that the re
gult is about the fame, whether it is turned
under to' the depth of four or eight inches
when near the surface, it decomposes sooner,
and hence act3 - sooner, and the supply is
goon exhausted ; when turned under deeper
its action i3 more extended and slow. Ilence
if applied just before the crop is intended
to benefit, it should be turned under by a
gballow furrow ; but if the interval between
the manuring-and the crop ia prolonged, the
furrow should be deepened in the same prr.
portion. Gfrvbaritovcn TeUgnph.
