It has always leen fo. to a tnc.
greater improvement upon spring sown crops
than cn winter rheat, and in England it has
teen ccticed that ia a very "wet eeason the
r.en.t on limed land is not so much ininred
v
"by the peramt moisture as that upon
:e land under the same or sLmilar cir-
cunstances.
Potatoes raised oa soil which has been re
cently limed are found to be much better
tasted and more free from "damage from in-
' eecta than upon virgin 'soil, though it has
not been proved that it materially increases
the crop. I have used it in both the caustic
and slacked state, but prefer the former, and
would apply it in an air-slacked form (that
is, slacked under cover) applied about the
' time cf the last hoe-harrowing, strewn on
top of the ground a3 nearly on the row a3
possible ; this I consider to be a prevention
of rot, either total or partial, in the crop.
Bat I have found it to produce a similar ef
fect anS doing much toward increasing the
crop, if, when fresh, it is mixed with half its
bulk of common coarse salt. Say one sack
of salt to five or six bushels of lime, and the
mixture allowed to remain under shelter for
two crthreemonthsbeforeit is used. "When
ed ia this way at the rate of a handfull to
every three feet of row, I have found it to
increase the crop fully as much as the same
amount of super-phopphate of approved
brand ; but I imagine that it does so at the
exiense of the soil and future crops. If
lime is strewn along the row3 cf peas in the
garden after they are a foot high, it will be
found to materially benefit the crop, both in
quantity and quality, and that the peas when
dried will boil soft more readily,
Of all our crops"fiax seems to be the only
one to which the application of lime is not
attended with beneficial results. "When ap
plied to this crop it has been found to di
minish the strength of the fibre and do noth
ing to increase the amount of marketable
flax. In Belgium it is a rule not to sow flax
upon any land which has not been more than
seven years without lime.
Lime seems to have the power of altering
the natural produce of land, discouraging
the growth of some kinds of seed and en
couraging the growth of others which have
long laid dormant in the soiL Not long since
one of my neighbors used lime in conjunction
with barnyard manure with his wheat ; he
he obtained his grass seed from a field on
which not a mullein was to be seen, but when
the wheat was taken ofT: the soil was found
to be as well set with mullein as with timo
thy and clover. Before plowing and for a
number of years no mulleins had been known
to go to seed on the field, and but few to
grow, probably not more than usually spring
up in all our. fields. Now it is well known
that if lime is applied in excess, it will en
courage the growth of the red poppy and the
yellow cow wheat (mdampyrum 2ralens)
and it may be possible that it has the same
or a simalar effect upon dormant mullein
seed, or it may be that the application of
lime with the barnyard manure had some
thing to do with it.
Lime also hastens the maturity of all our
crops, especially those of grain, which are
brought forward from ten to twelve days
earlier when it is used by your friend. Ger.
mantoven TdegrapJu
BRAINING.
The importance of draining is not proper
ly understood nor duly appreciated among
nx Although water i3 indispensable to veg
etation, too much of it 13 quite as hurtful as
too little. It is necessary to the germination
of the seed to the decomposition of vege
table matter in the soil to the transmission
of food to the plant, to its circulation there
and to the maturity of the product.
It is not from the surface that we are to
determine whether the land is sufficiently
dry to support a healthy vegetation, but we
must examine the under stratum from which
the plants draw their nourishment. If this
ia wet, if it grows marshy plants, if water
will collect in a hole sunk fifteen inches be
low the surface, the land is too wet "for culti
vated crops, and means should be taken to
render it more dry.
Cold sour lands are invariably wet, if not
cn the surface then in the subsoil. Wet
lands are generally rich lands because the
presence of the water has prevented the de
composition of the vegetable matter, which
when the surplus water is drawn off becomes
food for the growing crops.
Let me suppose a case which will be found
to exist in many portions of the country.
There is a slope of a little hill half a mile in
extent terminated by a flat through which a
little brook runs. The coil of this slope is
from eight to ten inches deep, of a porous
quality, and resting upon an impervious sub
soil. Near the top of this slope, all along on
a horizontal line or perhaps lower down,
"spouts" or springs burst through the sub
soil, the waters from which find easy passage
through the Iooser porou3 soil of the slope
and fiat, soon find their way into the brook.
A thermometer plunged down to the sub
soil in midsummer will indicate a tempera-
ture of not more than sixty, whereas most of
cur crops require a temperature of at least
seventy to eighty. How shall wo remedy
ti evil and render this land productive?
Simply by running a drain across the slope
jast above where the land is. too wet, and
thus ccr; duct the water into the brock through
a hamless channel. '
Soma will object to thi3 cn the plea that it
will cost too much, butto such I can give noth
ing better than the Scotchman's answer to a
ar objection that it. cost more not to
do it.'
