" Com, "Tt iiere it- is inclined to be vroidy should

iry jj-Jzcmenf commend hoeing corn Tvhen
To-o small, and pile the dirt tip around it so
that becoming strangled, ad it were, it teems
to stint the coro, and it docs not get over it
for some time. The principle object for hoe
ing the first time should be to stir the ground
and destroy the weeds, which should be- com
pletely exterminated, if possible, by-hoeing
them up and leaving them between the' rows
; exposed to the sun, which will cause them to
i wither nd die. Many farmers! hoe their com
! in cloudy well-as fair weather. . TTiisis poor

! Jy, does no result in the good that will fol
I low a warm dry "day ; and a great many run
! over their hoeing aa though 11 depended on
1 the quicke&t potiible time it could le passed

1 farmer "Slack" goes over Ids cornfield?, and
thenext day it looks as though it wants ar.
other good hoeing, but does not get it, and the
. result in the fall ia teen in a field crowded wit h

; Pnm sTirtnld be hoed the second time within
ten days of the first, and the -ground thor
oughly stirred. I Jo not think it to be good
policy to drive aTiorc and cultivator between
the rows, as it is apt to cut and tear up the
roots of tho corn, especially when large. Do
not make little conical hills aa though to shed
the rain, but hilb broad and shallow. If
your com comes np to weed.-? after two good
hoeings, take a hand or two from your haying
and go through it and cut down the weeds.
The com will ripen eailier and get beyond the
danger of early frosts, and the weeds will not
fall their rineninrr peeds into th! earth to
choke up your crop of wheat or oats another
year. A good tanner wiil look into the t attire

SALT IN FATTENING SWINE.
A correspondent states some interesting
experiments to test the use of salt in fatten
ing swine. " 'lie selected two pair of barrow
hogs, "weighing 00 lr,.. apiece. Onn pair
received.'with ! daily allowance of food, two
ounces of salt, th other pair, similarly fed.
none. In the course of a week, it was easi
ly seen that the salted pair had a much
stronger appetite than the others, and a.' era
fortnight it was increased to two ounces
apiece. After four month?, the weight of
the salted hogs was Gov lbf. each, while that
of the tmsalted. five weeks later, reached
only 300 lb". The experiment was repeated
with almost precisely the same result. The
correspondent feed young pig3 according to
their age, a quarter of an ounce daily, breed
ing mws very little -during pregnancy, and
during the heat cf summerwifhbolds it in a
-decree from all, as it induces thirst and a li
ability to disease.
BREAKING COLTS.
"David," in the Germantoum TeJerajih,
EaysTie is strongly opposed, l oth in principle
and practice,to 'breaking colfcs'-that is allow
ing them to attain the age oft vo or more j ex: s
Tefore they are taken in hand for learning
the principles which are to form so impor
tant a part in their future life. There should
;be no "breaking" about it. The education
should begin as soon as the colt is born, and
if properly attended t, will be perfect by
he time he is large enough to -drive. Being
lecLor tied with a halter should he -his first
lesson, and the seoner he learns it the short
er the struggle and the more permanent the
lesson ; never give him a chance to break
loose, for once done and he will remember it
for a long time ; and, if the lesson be too of
ten repeated, he will make a proficient in
this net desirable art.
J. "W. BnowNjKeniucgton, N. II., makes
calculation of the loss in plowin g an are
of land fourteen rods in length, by turning
the team at the ends. If the furrows are
nine inches wide, it wfd require about four
and two-thirds hours to turn the team at the
ends. . If the acre was 50 rods long, it would
require only one and one-third hotm-tomake
the turns. He estimatesiLe distance traveled
in plowing an acre at e!even and five-eight,
miles. ,
Woas: roa Wet Days. Look after your
implements and tools. Do not let them lie
around, in out of the way places, to get rusty-;
"but have "a place for everything, and every
thing in its place. " These are the days to
attend to them, and when you are through,
and have looked over your cattle and sheep,
lake your paper in hand, and see if you can
not get some new ideas to work upon when
the rain b over. "
PE2L302CAL Supervision. Attend every
' day to your stock and crops. Blessed is that
farmer who attends tohis stock, and sees that
theb every want is regularly supplied. No
one can do this like the farmer. W,ich them
closely, andyou will be surprised how much
more interest you will take in them yourself,
and your men will derive new excrt-'oa-? from
your presence in the barns and in your mead-

Watek. Do not overlook the importance
of having a bountiful strppry of pure water
for your stock. If there is no spring, or wa
ter in the meadow where you turn your stock
into, let them be driven to water nitrht and
morning. Sheep and cattle often suffer from
this cause airing the summer month. See
that they do not in your case.
Wheat Harvest. Will soon 'be here,
and pre peration should he made beforehand.
Have all your rakes and implements in first
rate or J . See that you have enough help
engaged to do thework ; if not, make arrange
ments at once to get more.
