    AGRICULTURAL .
' , A Barn-Yard Lyric.
That man's cuccesa is rich and sure,
Who thai piles.up his home manure j v
I know what help the farmers get
From mere spoonful of 'foudrett.
I know what odd, mysterious shapes
From superphosphates, down to Mapes,
The modern helps to farming- take, ;
AaJ . tecp myself to all awake.
I know the chemist will propound
A eack of bones when finely ground,
As good on iand when rioh or poor,
As a full wagon of manure.
They may be right, they may be wrong ;
Jly faith will still conttnua strong,
That he whose ardor "ne'er abates,
And his own garden cultivates,
"With muck, sods and stalks and straw,.
And dripping heaps from thriving kint j
"Will to his hungry fallows draw
All that the chemists can combine.
HOW I PLOW.
Suppose the field to be fifty by thirty
two rods and plow land should never
be in smaller than twu acre fieldi-I plow
it by comm'ccicg in the middle with a
furrow eighteen rods long and parallel to
the longest eides, the ends of the funow
leingat equal distances from the short
est sides. Then tack furrow or turn
around to the right making tha first two
farrows two inches shallower than the
others, to avoid a ridge. After four fur
xows plow across tho ends, aad the woik
13 laid out. i If the land is uneven or the
joil not uniform, some cjra is necessary
to Eeep tho furrows straight and bring
the work out alike on all sides. The ad
vantages of this method are that the team
and plowman turn on the unplowed land,
eaving time and strength, and leaving
Lai land trodden after it is plowed. It
also does away with the necessity of
furrows and ridges which are serious de
triment to the use of machines.
Io the place of a cou'ter I use a jiat
er or miuature plane, which cuts two
inches deep, or more or less as desired
and puts the stubble or sward complete
ly out of sight; facilitating its decuy
This little jointer furrow, under the main
farrow, tends to brace it up and keep the
ground more loose, while it leaves the
turface in a condition requiring much
less tillage than ordinary plowing to fit
itforacrop.
But the improvement that pleases us
most is the patent sub-soUiog attachment,
it loosens the ground in the bottom-of
the furrow to any depth desired, if the
character of the soil and strength will)
permit. This accomplishes all the eub
oil plow does with a great saving of ex
pense. It is sub-soiling made easy or at
least easier.
I do most of my plowing with three
horses "breast. It is claimed and I
think truly, that three horses ia this way
are equal to four where one team is hitch
ahead of another which requires an extra
band for driver. Many plows are now
made with a movable beam, by which
the width of the furrow is guaged instead
of by the clevis, thus securing as nice a
working of the plow with three hordes as
"With two. and requiring no extra labor
on the part of the plowman. .For my
own comfort I would rather plow two
and three-fourths acres wirh three hor.-es
than two acres with two thirds the
gtrength of team. It is much less tire
iome plowing when the team moves off
easily and with comparitively little strain
than when they must pull hard at every !
tep. " .
The nse of the subsoiler is an exper
iment and when the result is manifest in
another year's crop, I will make it known.
L. ia Working Farmer.
Fa&M Accounts. The editor of the
"Working Farmer writes:
You can find no more efficient means
of cultivating joarself, than to write
down daily, or weekly a description of
your cultivation of your fields. If your
hands are to hard you can't write, it is a
sign that the hand is used too much, and
that again, is a sign that the hend is used
too little. 13a able a year from to-day
to tell how much your farming for 1866
costs you, 'and how much the proceeds of
jour work' are worth. Every successful
merchant takes an inventory at least
once a year, and every farmer ought to
do the same.
