Our Choice
Mn. EniTOR. Your paper a few weeks since
gave a list of the names of tho democratic candi
dates in the field for (ho Assembly. Among them
we noticed, with pleasure, that of Mr. SILAS H.
ENGEL, of Sunbury. A the time is approaching
for the nomination of candidates, ynu will much
oblige many of your democratic friends in this
township, by permitting us to express nur prefer
ence for the gentleman above named, as a suita
ble person to represent us in the next Legislature.
AVe know Mr. Exnri lo possess the requisite
qualifications to make such a representative a
the democracy of Old Nor humberland desire,
and shall, therefore, earnestly urge upon the party
Lis nominntion. In his democracy we have full
faith, knowing him to-be identified with the
rendiug measures of the paity. In his knowledge
of the affairs of the Slate, complicated as they are
at present, we have the assurance that he will
be able to render important service. Besides, he
is truly and rmphalii ally oie nf the paifdc, in every
sense of the kirn in sympathy as well as in sc
linn mid cons, qtiemly an command a vote whicb
few others will he ahle to do. Tho convention,
we are persuaded, could put no person in nomina
tion for this office who would render more satis
faction, and who would rt fleet more credit upon
the county, (ban Mr. Engcl.

Mr. Editor. The time is approaching when
we should think about selecting a candidate for
he Legislature. We have heard of a goodly
number of persons who have been mentioned as
andidateg, and the claims of this person and that
nerson, and of this side and that side of the river.
Vow we, who are not office hunters, think the 'lo
al habitation' of the candidate is of much less im
portance than his ability, his honesty and integri
y. And as for the claims of any one to office,
ve look upon it as a humbug, as well as anti-re-publican.
Offices' were made for the people and
tot for the benefit of officeholders, who are,
r at least ought to be, the servants of the people,
f there are any claims or rights in these matters,
hey belong to the people, who have a right, and
hould exercise that right in selecting such per--i)t
who are beat calculated to promote their in
;rcstt, as well as the interests of the public,
uch a man we think we find in the person of
LEXANDER JORDAN, Esq., of Sunbury, and
1 he hat contented to terve if nominated and
ected, let every good democrat and citizen put
1 shoulder to the wheel ami insist upon his
miinatiou. His election would follow of course,
id would allay all excitement and division.

Da. SWaisi Dear Sir: Ilsving been almost
miraculously cured by your valusble medicine, I
think it not nmre than common gratitude in me to
make one addition to the long list nf certificates
which ynu have received of remaikab'e cures by
your medicine. During the two years prereding
last AukusL I whs very much distresnd by a very
bad cold and racking cough, and during the latter
p rt of ihe time 11 continued to grow worse, and
iiide-d. in July my friends gave me over, having
tried all kinds of medicine, said to be good for such
disesses, without tho least good 1 fleet. I was re
duced almost to a perfect corpse, and had scarcely
any fWh upon my body, and for a long time no
ver thought to rie fiom my bed again. A fiiend
nne dny a-ked mo if I had tried Dr. Swathe's
Compound Syrup of Wild Chsrrt, and advised
roe to do so at once, as he heard thai it had worked
a great many wonderful cures. I took his advice,
and after uk'iiik up several bottles of it, I grew so
much better thst 1 was enabled lo leave my bed,
and afterwards to walk about the house, and go
nut into the atreet. I was encouraged by this, and
continued the use nf your medicine, and now, by
means of ita wonderful curative powers, I am per
fectly well, and enjny the use nf all my faculties,
just aa much as if 1 had never In-en afflicted in the
way I described to you. I h ive written this not
thinking thst it wdl at alt interest ynu, but huinblv
hoping that it will have its mite nf influence in csu
sine your valusble medicine tn be spread among
mankind, and in nssis.ing l rsise you to th it sta
