Since, the 1st inst, there Ims been little or no
speculation in Corn, and the trade left to its
usual course or supply ami demand. The mar
ket has been in a very dull and innctivt state,
with declining prices for moot articles, except
Indian Corn, of which there has been consider
able enquiry, as it is not only looked upon as an
.excellent substitute for Potatoes, and has fur
w ma years been used lor human food in Ireland,
tint there is a strong expectation that Govern
ment uiay relax the restrictive system with re
grd to this article, by admitting it free of duty ;
and it i not grown in this country, such a
measure would not meet with much opposition.
Its present vtlue is about .His. a iis. p. rqr. in
bond but as the duty on it is governed by that
of Barley, and this latter article is now reced
ing in value, we do nut expect to sec a lower
duty than I5s crls. per qr. at present. The
check winch has been iriven to Oats will aim
most likely prevent the duty falling below 'As.
per qr. on this article, and that on Wheat to
12 a 13s. per qr., in consequence of the infe-
rior quality of the new crop, a considerable por
tion of which is now selling in Lincolnshire
below ijOs. per qr. ; pood quality of new En

as this is considered cheaper thnn bonded,
which is still held for high prices, it has be
gun to attract the notice of speculators.
We see no reason to alter the opinion we
liave before expressed that we are not likely to
liave any immediate advance in the value of
grain, and as money i ettine scarce, and will
most likely become more" difficult to obtain, it
will have a depressiti!: el?e:t upon its value in
diminishm? speculation.

Tke Mormnna.
Mrs. Smith, the widow of the Mormon pro
tect, has addressed a letter to the New York
Sun, declaring that it is nut her intention to go
to California, or any other remote place, with
the Mormons. She says;
"The laws of the United States are quite
good enough tor me and my children, and my
settled intention is to remain where 1 am, take
care of my property, and if I cannot educate my
children here, send them to New York or New
England fo'r that purpose. Many of the Mor
tnons will, no doubt, remove in the spring, and
many more will remain here; and nothing would
give me greater pleasure than to have a mixed
society in Nauvoo, as in other cities, and all ex
clusive religious distinctions abolished.
" must now nay, that I never fur a moment
belietcd in what my husband called his uppari
linns and revelation, as I thought him labor
ing under n diseased mind ; yet, they may all
be true, as a prophet is seldom without credence
or honor, exceptinu in his own family or coun
try; but as my conviction is to the contrary, I
shall educate my children in a different faith,
and teach them to obey and reverence the laws
and institutions of their country."
She also says:
I am left here, sir, with a family of children
to attend to, without any means ot giving them
an education, for there it neil a school in the ci
ty, nor is it intended there shall be any here, or
at any other place, where the men who now go
vern this infatuated, simple-minded people, have
sway. I have not the least objection that these
petty tyrants remove to California, or any other
remote place, out of the world if they wish, lor 1
they will never be of any service to the Mor
mons, or the human family, no matter where
they go. Their object is to keep the people
over whom they rule in the greilest ignorance,
and most abject religious bondage, and if these
poor, confiding creatures remove with them,
they wiil die in the wilderness "

Cause of Pain. Pain ialhe consequence of the i
exertion of ihe organ or part where it is present to
thtow off morbid or corrupt humors, for no pain
can exist but from the presence of those mailers
which aie of an unhealthy character. When we
have pain in the head, in the bowels, or in any
part of the body, it only proves the piesence of mai
lers which the blood is trying lo remove, and it is
this struggle which is the occasion of pain. To he
bled only relieves the anguish in proportion as the
mount of life ia reduced, and the same may be
said of all lulling or sonhing remedies. Not so
with Brandretb'a Pills; they at once go to the as
sistance of the blood in aiding it lo discharge bad
humors, to conquer the Death Principle. To re.
lieve pain in Ibis wsy does lint leave any bad ef
fects. The Life Principle is not reduced, nor axe
the teeth destroyed ; hill all the organs are cleansed
and theii health insured.
