itcit in the above statement.
From the mnnnor in whirh the bonks of the of
ficers on the Columbia railroad have been hereto
fore kept, the actual coat of operation for any one
year cannot be ascertained. A statement of its ex
penditure and receipts for the picscnt year is all
that can be given. This, however, allows that tho
toad will lie msde very productive.
We extract fram the report tho following state
ment in relation to that portion of the Improve
tncnts, together with the concluding remarks of the
Hoard t
('otVMai RttnoAti.
'The retrenchments which have been made on
1thisl road are. exhibited in the subjoined statements
of its receipts and expenditures.

From the arrangement made and the system
adopted for the management of the road, the ex
penses paid and the liabilities incurred, as above
plated, may be safely assumed as an avenge for the
whole year. If therefore the receipts should not
fall olT, the operations of the twelve months, end
ing with March next, will picscnt the following re
sult :
Repairs Excess of receipts over ex
penditures f 104,099 10
Miire Po wtr Excess of receipts
over expenditures 105,519 50

In addition to the above, the Hoard have among
ethers, made the following retrenchment :

The Hoard would observe in conclusion, that
ttill further reductions are contemplated, and it is
their determination to reduce the expenditure to
the lowest possible point consistent with a due re
gard for the safety of public works, and an clli
cient and economical despatch of the trade and tra
vel thereon. They are satisfied, from present re
sults, that the main line can be made productive ;
and thut it may be made very productive, provided
the appropriations be annually m ide in time to en
able the otliccrs to execute the necessary repairs
without resorting to a system of credit, which has
for some years past, keen the am: of aJJing luigc.

We are ell alike liable to disease and death is
the certain lot of all that live and have a being and
although the latter cannot be averted, still the for

rendered less painful to the afflicted. There is one
disease, however, which seems for ages to have de

gresa, by the application of remedies within their
reach, or known in tbeir practice hut timrir
Tin has defied their united skill. It has stalked
forth with impunity, gathering in its cheerless em
brace a friend from every circle, and a member
from every family, and casting gloom and daikurss
o'er the place of its visitation. He then, whose la
bors have brought forth a medicine which in many
cases will arrest the progress of this fatal di-ese
and which will also u fiord relief in the mo-l stub
born und hopeless, should be regarded -in the liyht
of a public benefacter. It is confidentially bi licvnl
that Duncan's expectorant remedy will ! this.
Hence it is presented and recommended to the com.
munity. This medicine immediately palliates and
relieves the distrcs-ing cough, causing a free and
easy expectoration; stopping the hectic fever and
night sweats, healing the ulcerated lungs, ar.d nr.
resting the fatal progress of Consumption, at the
same time, strengthening the weak and debilitated,
regulating the bowels, and producing quiet rest and
sweet repose. This "REMEDY" cn he. relied
upon, to do all that lays in the power of medical
aid, being used in the private practice of the late Dr.
Duncan, (Piofess.ir in the University of Edinhurg.)
for upwards of eighteen years, by which, thousands
have been restored to perfect health. It is n t un
