A respectable portion of the citizena of the Bo

Wkiinksiiat Evkxish, Aug. 25, 18-11.
Met according to adjournment, when the com

tions reported through their chairman the following,
which was ununimously adopted:
AViiF.nKAs, we, a large portion of the Democra
tic citizens of the Borough of Northumberland,
ileom it expedient to meet in public meeting, and
express our earnest wish and desire, and such made
manifest by actual exertion, to secure to the whole
Democratic Ticket a triumphant election, and set at
defiance any attempt by designing men, in endea
voring to leach us new lessons on the principle of
disorganization ; and that we have assembled foi the
purpose of showing the democretic party that we
entertain the highest regard for honorable and regu
lar nominations, and that the usages of the demo
cratic parly when adherud to met with guaranteed
success, and on the contrary, when factions endea
voring to distract it, success was attended with dif
ficulty, but at this time, feeling ourselves animated
by the exertions made on the part of the friends of
the irregular nominee, knowing as we do that their
exertions are made for the purpose of self-grntilicu-ion,
loosing sight of the injury done to the demo
cratic party in other respects, such as enabling the
vhigs to have a majority in the next legislature,
ud placing ihemsclvcs under the bondage of te
ens & Co. for seven years longer. Therefore
Resolved, That the Democracy of old Notlhum
'crland will adhere to the spirit of the ancient rc
lublican standard, an J will support democrutic men
o carry out democratic mcasuics.
Resolved, That in the approaching campaign, the

londay the Dili insl., is composed of good men and
tie, and we do hereby pledge ourselves to use all
onoruble and fair means to promote tho success of
ic whole ticket at the pulls on the 2d Tuesday of

Resolved, That wc cinnol approve of the course
ohn McKiiincy has taken in suffering himself to
e used as a tool of a f. w designing men, Ij di fe.il
ic regular democratic ticket, many of us being his
arm friends previous to that time.
Rewired, that we give it as our deliberate opini
i, that David B. Montgomery, our rcgulary limn
lated candidate, for the legislature, received his
omination as honorably and fairly as ever any man
reived a nomination, (ho assertions of a few dis
jointed to tho contrary notwithstanding.
Resolved, That Pennsylvania policy and D. If.
orler, are inseperable for thiee years longer at
ust, and under that conviction we are determined
secure his re-election, if honorable und earnest
sertions will achieve us thnt victory.
Resolved, that wc recognise in D. R. Porter, our

ises and to the times, and that he is entitled lo the
Mlitude of the people of Pennsylvania for hi firm

' As the myalory coupled with the movements of
e present managed of the U. S. Bank thickens,
a public dissatisfaction increases. It is the Almost
liversal belief that Mr, Biddle now holds the di
ciiou of ihe suits recently instituted against him
ihe bank in his owu hands ; and that when ho
all desire to have a eertilica'e of character from a
urt of juslico he will have a judgement for the dc

Agreeably to public notice, Ihe above meeting
was held on the 25th Inst., on Ihe farm, and closo
to the residence of Mrs. Davis in Columbia county.
The day was fine, and the number assembled was
c timatcd at from twolve to fifteen hundred per
sons. Tho spot selected was beautiful and conve
nient, well supplied with seals, and shaded by the
ample foliage of forest trees.
Though the bird., shy of man, had retired with
their merry notes to a distance, the presenco of nu
merous ladies animated the scene, and gave pro
mise of much success to the cause. The Tcmjier
unce Societies of Danville and Milton enme on to
the ground in procession, attended by the Bands of
their respective towns, to which was added the
Temperance Band from Sunbury. Many of the
members of the Milton Society wore a beautiful sa
tin badge, on which was printed the following ver
ses, headed by a largo ship under full sail :
Spf.Kn, SrcKu the Tkmpwiance Sine.
Speed, speed ihe Temperance Ship !
Ye winds fill every sail,
Behold her sailing on the deep,
Outriding every gale:
The Tempest's fury she outbraves,
4ir hosts of deathless drunkards sans.
Speed, speed the Temperance Ship !
Who joins us in the ciy !
Mothers and children cease lo weep,
Our ship is passing by ;
We wish to take you all on board
-1 freight of in ere i to the Lord.'
Speed, speed the Temperance Ship !
Ye young nnd aged shou! ;
Behold her sailing o'er the deep,
With all her streamers out,
Bound for the true tec-total shore,
Where streams of death are drunk no more.
Mr; Bddy, of Cattawissa, was chosen Chief
Mar-ahull of the day ; when, under his prompt di
rection, the following order of exercises was obser
ved : Tho Rev. Mr. Rhodes of ihe Methodist Church
addressed the Thrcne of (.'race, and then John Coo
per, Esq. of Danville, delivered an nddrcH; after
which a recess was had for the purpose of taking
refreshments. The Clergymen, Musicians, and
many others, enjoyed the hosp tality ol Mrs. Davis
in on ample dinner, accompanied by ditmghta ol
nature's sparkling champagne :
" O Water for me, bright water for me,
And wine for the tremulous debauchee.
It cooleth the brow ; it cooleth the brain ;
It maketh the faint one strong again ;
It comes o'er the sense as a breeze from the sea,
All freshness like infant purity :
So water for me, bright water for me ;
Give wine, give wine to the debauchee."
On re-assembling, the Rev. R. A. Fisher of Suu
ury, of the Gorman Reformed Church, addressed
the meeting in (he Gorman language. The next
speaker was the Rev. Mr. Halt ol 'ihe Baptist Church,
who was succeeded by Ihe Rev. Mr. Hirst of the
Methodist Church.
The intervals of the addiesses, and other periods
of tho lime, weie enlivened by the music of the
different bands.
Without making any distinction it is proper to
say, that the addresses were appropriate as lo mat
ter and manner, evidencing Ihe deep interest ot
ihe speakers in the cause of which they weie Ihe
advocates, and calculated to make friends to it, und
to revive and stimulate those who me uheailv its
fast friends.
At the conclusion of the last address, a pioce?-
sion of six or seven hundred was formed, who, ha
ving marched in ihe woods a while, relumed lo Ihi ir
seals. Thanks were then voted to those who had
assisted in the Hrrangemeuts and hospitalities of the
occasion, among whom, though not name I, Mis.
Davis and Mr. Smrck wcro pmliculnrly intended,
for adding so much lo Ihe convenience ami com
fort of ihe meeting ; and also to ihe dilVereud bands
for their very acceptable services; and, ullhough
the mover of the resolution fell a diffidence as to
including ihe speakers, yet I feel no reluctance in
extending the resolution so as to cnibiaco them, as
I am sure thai I have the unanimous yea lo il, ol
the respectable and wi ll-plmsed audience. The
services of the day were concluded '.villi the bene
diction by the Rev. James Williamson of the Pres
byterian Church. The friends of Temperance, in
referring to tho occasion, caa all siy, it was good
to be there. It was pleasant lo exchange congra
(ula'ious; feci the stimulating influence of union,
and to renew our consecration to the glorious cause.
The complete order w hich reigned in so large an
assembly in the open ail, was an evidence itself of
the subduing influence of temperuueu over the pas
sions of men, restraining them w iihiu the bounds of
propriety, and disposing tin in lo observe the con
duct and courtesies so necessary to tho convenience
and comfort of social life.
Another source of gratification, n well as hope
for the good cause, furnished by the im cling, w is
the presence of eleven ministers of the Ger. Ref
Meth., Bap. and Pres. denominations, who evinced
their hearty appiohation of the work, and, as it j
were, pledged tht-in-clvcs, that, as lo whatever else
they may differ, hetc they are united and determi
ned that they will give no quarter lo I'liuco Alco
hol, and will use all their iiilluence In have him ex
terminated, and his Icrriloiy of sorrow, desolation
und ruin brought under the dominion ol civilization,
humanity, law and religion.
May all ministers of the gospel see to it, that they
are not wanting ia duty to this great and good
cause.
Without Bsumiiig to penetrate (he mind direct
ly, therouiitenanccs of the multitude gave evidence
thai ihey approved of the meeting, and told of such
delight aa termed to ask, when shall wo have ano
ther such a meeling 1 Shall we not, at least aunu
ally, have a Ttmprranrc Jubileo Uucath the thado
of the forest, and beside the elnyslal fountain, where
we shall renew the filings of this day, and vt n
brighter hopes, und receive a I'icsh impulse in the
vtoik to which wc have divolid our. vea !
"Ilallalujah ! we sing to the Saviour of mm,
Whose smile has attended the abstinence plan,
Whose blessing has saved ihe drunkard from dentil,
And brought him lo walk in the Temperance palh.
Hallelujah ! we sing for the mercies bestow M,
In leading Ihe wretches lo peace and lo God,
And saving lost drunkaids from ruin and woe,
And making them blessings wherever they go.
Hallelujah ! we sing, let God be adored,
For dwellings of sorrow to comfort restored ;
Where tho drunkard once dwelt, the graces now
reign,
And the molto of each, and of all is abstain.
Hallelujah! we'll sing as tho watchword we give;
Hallehijuh ! we'll sing so long as we live,
Hallelujah ! to Jesus, the Saviour of man ;
Hallelujah ! be sung by nil who abstain."

iinvllle Steam Mill.
By an adveitismeut in this paper, it will be seen
that tho Danville Steam Mil! is offered for sale.
The owner of the Mill, Mr. Baliit, has now been
engaged in commercial business, in this place, for
about twenty-seven years past, and his ell'oils have
been crowned with success, to a degree perhaps
uneiiualled by uny other merchant who has done
business in this county. He is now disposed to
relinquish, and retire from, active business, and has
therefore resolved lo dispose some of his property.
Hence Ihe Steam Mill is for sale, and the vast quan
tity of busjness constantly flowing to the Mill, is a
sure guaninly that the properly is worthy ofthe nl
lention of aolive business men Danville luhl.
A pamphlet has been published by some of the
Chartists in England, in which, says the New
York Commercial, as ono means of relief to their
surplus population, it is gravely proposed "that all
the children of I he working people alter the Ihild,
be dispjsed of by painless extinction!" In other
words, that they be smothered at their birth, to lid
the parents of tho responsibility ol their support.
