up Broadway ymderday,-and. enjoyed the bright
sunshine overhead and in the brig faces of the

great thoroughfare. Hundred dollar bonnets, fair

and, sparkling jewelry reminded one of "Flowers
personified," while a sprinkling of military uni
forms, an occasional brass band, here and there

some interest to an Irishman arguing polities with
a Democratic friend: Ms antagonist spoke of
the high prices of provisions in consequence of
the war. "Well," said the Irishman, ." when
flour was $5 a barrel, I had only $2,50 to bny it
with, now I have in my pocket $l5 to buy my
flour, and $lO to bet on Lincoln." In good,hom
est truth,, we have come across but three gentle
men who are- - M'Clellan men. There appears to
be a.general feeling to support Mr. Lincoln, al a
neressity.
We undertook to procure a boarding place last
week, and of course advertised in the Herald.
We received about a peck of 'answers; and mak
ing a selection of some half a dozen sallied forth.
Our first visit was to a lady v,:ho informed us that
she took none but Insurance: and Bank officers,
and she presumed that 'We were in that line. As
the room she showed us was not much 'larger
than a good sized bed, we informed her that we
were not in that line. The next place we visited
was kept bra Jewish lady, who said that all her
boarders were French and German merchants of
the highest respectability (from this we inferred
that they paid their board punctually), and that_
she cooked to suit them. This put into our head
visions of cheese and beer, onions and garlic, thin
soups and sour wines. We tried a third place,
very nice, and were_ offered a good room at $2O
per. week, with the privilege of breakfast and tea,
and the liberty of getting our dinner where we
roilld. Again we tried, and got into a magnificent
house. Everything seemed to .suit. The land
lady, a fine looking woman, seemed to have a
twang in her speech that caused us to inquire her
nationality. She answered "I'm a Jew, and we
are all Jews here; and I must tell you, if you are
a church man, that you'll not be pleased with our
way of keeping Sunday. Some of our boarders
play the piano and other instruments, and we
sometimes concerts in the parlor, and wine
parties; and should my little boys whistle Yankee
Doodle, I wouldn't want them interfered with.y —
Bi , ing a church man, we declined the' honor of it
temporary shelter in her house. We fared no
better in subsequent trials, and are yet without a
home. We, one of .the poor C—g unfortu
nates, are yet lyingabout loose,a stray waif upon
the broad oecatiof life. Alas, alas for the home-.
less! We are writing ha a.bar room, surrounded
by loud talking argumentators, the prineipartirgtz
mente being oaths. Across the way is a huge ,
sign—" Cafe, Billiard, Restauration, Wein and
Bier." - We will walk over and see what is to be
seen. Ninety cars pass the door every hour, so
we mast be careful. We'll report our ohserva
tions and safety in our next.

THE DRAFT.—We give herewith the list of
drafted men for Somerset county. Conscripts
can put in substitutes at any time before they are
ordered into service, and they can procure men
for substitutei without regard to their liability
for military duty. Will not the few deficient dis
tricts in Franklin county yet make aut effint to
fill their quotas-? They have loot largely of their
men; and doubtless are entitled to an adjUstment
of their Auotas ;:hut they should mote promptly.
We hope fit` the credit of our noble county that
it will require no district to be drafted. We sub
join the list drawn in Somerset. It includes the
one hundred per cent. additional to cover exemp
tions. .

BURGLARY.—„The warehouse of Waderlicit
& Need wan burglariously entered on Wednesday
evening last by a false key; the safe blown open
and three ;United Staten bonds for $5OO each and
some papers stolen.' There were several hundred
dollars of money in one of the drawers of the safe,
but they overlooked that, and did nut get it. Pay
ment has been stopped on the honds. No elne

highest number of votes - for Inspector shall not attend on
the day of election, then the person who shelithave re
ceived the rwcond highest number of votes for Judgeat

theCtrcrai Assembly of the session of 1851, entitled," An
Act to' provide for the election of Judges of the IMMO!
Courts of Ms Commonwealth, ond, to regulate Certain
dicial Districts: -
" " 4. Thai the election for Judges shall be held and;

and officers, and by the provisions of the Act of the Gen-

or advise and procure another so to do, he or they shall, on
conviction, be fined in any sum not lest than fifty nor more
than five hundred dollars, and be immisonednot lent than
three nor more than twelve months.

any person not qualified to vote in this Common
wealth, ageemddy to law, (except the smut of qualified cit
izens') shall appear at any place of election for the pet:poise
of hotting tickets or of influencing the citizens 4nalilled to
vote, he shall, on conviction, forfeit and pay any sum not
exceeding One hundred dollars for every such offence, and
be imprisoned for any time not exceeding twelve mouths."

Pursuant to the provisions contained in the-76th section
of the act first aforesaid, the Judges of the aforesaid districts
shall respectively take-charge of the certificates of ratan,
of the election of their respective districts, and produce them
at a meeting clone Judge from each district, at the Bare'
of Chambersburg, on 4 the third day after the election, being
for the present year on Friday, the 14th day of October
next, then and there to do and perform the duties required
by law of said judges.
Also—That where a Judge by sickness or unavoidable
accident, is unable to attend each meeting of JW.m thee
the certificate of return aforeshid shall be toted erge dt
by one of the Inspectors or Clerks of the election of said
&strict, who shall do and perform the duties required of
said Judge unable to attend.
