Give Water Freely. Horses and oxen
at work need water often. The ploughman
carries his jug of water, or leaves his team
to rest while he gue3 to the house for a
drink. But the team works harder than
the driver, and needs diiuk as often ; yet
teams are taken out early in the ruorning.to
the prairie field, where there is no water
except in the driver's jus, and worked five
' or hix hours before they get a drop. Is it
any wonder that they are injured by drink
ing too much when thsy are taken to the
spring at Doon ? As an act of kindnes3 to
the horses and oxen that serve man so
iaithfully, and as a matter of economy, we
recommend that in cases where water is Dot
in or very near the field in which the team
is at work, a tub or cask Lc famished, and
filled with water a regularly a3 the driver's
jug. This, with a bucket, can be set in the
wagon, and the team shonld Lc permitted to
drink once every half day, and oftencr if
the weather is warm. If every one adopted
this plan, we should hear no more of "wa
ter founder." The teams would be more
vigorous and hardy, and perform more work
fur their owners.
Flowers. House plants ought to be
stimulated gently once or twice a week.
Plain water, so refreshing to summer flow
ers, always contains ammonia, which also
abounds in all liquid manures. If you
take an ounce of pulverized carbonate of
ammonia, dissolved in one gallon of water,
it will make spring water even more stimu
lating to your plants than rain water. If
you water your plants once in two weeks
with guano water (one table-spoonful to a
pail of water) they will grow more thrifty.
Chicken's manure dissolved in water is ex
cellent. Always keep the soil in your flow
er pots loose. A common hair pin -used
daily will stir the earth sufficiently.
To EACH bowl of starch, add one tcaspoon
ful of Epsom salts, and dissolve in the usu
al way by boiling. Articles starched by
this will be stiffer, and will be rendered to a
certain degree fire proof. All who use
kerosene oil should give the above a trial.
Ik you desire to be certain that your
eggs are good and fresh, put them in water.
If the buts turn up they axe not freih.
This is an infallible rule to distinguish a
good egg frcm a bad one.
