The farmers of the Western States are becoming seriously alarmed in re garil to the ravages of the potato bu, and net without good reason, from all account?. Col. Frederick Hacker, a scientific farmer of Belleville, Illinois, who has been investigating the matter, says the Lug is a native of the ennons of the Rocky Mountains, where it feeds on the wild potato. It left its original haunts in 1SG4, and is traveling eastward at the rate of about one hundred and fifty miles a j-ertr. It has already reached tlio Allegheny mountains, the line of its march being over Iowa, Xorthern Tliliiois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio; and wherever the potato is found in abundance this destructive ' insect is likely to make its way in time; though it does not thrive in a southern climate It feeds upon the tomato, egg p1nnt-,tiiid others belonging to the fame family, -there are three successive Kcnc-ration3 hi each season. The first of these con tinues about twelve days.and if prompt ly and generally destroyed, the crop may be saved. Soon afier its Hrst emergence from the ground it begins to denobit its orange colored ecs on the under side of the potato leaf, from twenty to forty in a cluster. If these are not promptly destroyed in all th neighborhood where they appc-r, the croi) ii . almost certain to be ruiaed. When it is considered that in 1SGL the five States of IHinob, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin produced :M.17u,000 bushels of potatoes, valued :it 15,000,000, some ilea may be formed of the serkr.3 nature cf this destructive visitation. i A i K a largo turnip and scrape out the inside, leaving a thick wall all t round ; fill the cavity w ith earth, and pi ait in it seme clinging vine or morn ing glory. Suspend the turnip with cords, and in a little time the vinos w:!I tine around the st: i:ig, and the tur nip, sprouting fruin bebw. will put forth leaves and stems that will turn upward and curl gracefully arouril the b:;s ?. Kettles may be cleansed of onion and other odors by dissolving a tea-sp-ionfal of pe.ulash or sabratus in water, and washing them. tUi'.NTV UIllEUTOKV.
