The Rural Xeic Yorker has the following in relation to the lice which are so frequently found on apple trees: A corre?ponlent sends us a section of bark from an apple tree, covered " kh lice, and asks if we can explain what is its cause, if hurtful to the trees and the best remedy. Yes; it is the apple bark-louse (Coccut arlontm linearis, Modf.F.h. It i most common on unhealthful trees trees that are grown in grass lanI are mo.-t liable to be infected with theiu. It is hurtful to trees anl should be exterminated. A good way to do this is fiit to feed the trees liber ally with manure and ashes. Ashes alone, if you have no manure to spare, placed about the roots not in contact with the body will help. Dig up the grass about the tree. In the spring taku a hoe, and give the bark a good scraping: then wash the tree with sttong soap suds. This should be done at onoe and the washing repeated once or twice before the trees blossom. In the fall last of November whitewash the trunk and larger limbs of the tree. This, with manure or muck applied to the surface over the roots, will expel the lice. Do not whitewash your trees in spring. A Farmer's Expep-ience. That the success of farming is in experience. That to ask a man's advice is not stooping but often of much benefit. That to keep a place for everything, and everything in its place, saves many a step, and is pretty sure to lead to good tools, and to keeping them in good order. That kindness to stock is, like good shel ter, saving of fodder. That to-tight weeds is to favor grain, and do justice to your neighbors. That in making home agreeabfe,yo ket-p your boys at home. That it is a good thing to keep an eye out on experiments, and note all, both good and bad. That it is a good thing to grow into farm--ing not jump in. That it is a good rule to sell your graiu when it is ready. That the first mellow soil in the spring is your mellowest, and slrould be first put in. To OIL an iron axAetree, first wipe the spindle clean with a cloth wet with spirits of turpentine, and then apply a few drops of castor oil near the shoulder and end. One teaspoonful is sufficient for the whole. For axletrees on which there is a heavy pressure, it is a good plan to mix with the oil sou) 3 powdered plumbago or black lead. A correspondent of the Ohio Farmer thinks that one great cause of failure which often occurs in the cultivation of sorghum, is planting the seed too deep. The land should be mellow to a good depth, but the seed shcnld be covered shallow. Due gnorw eht ta nugeb. CO I! .N TV DIKECTOKV. TIME OF HOLDING COURT.
