Management of Balky Horses.
The first and Letter way is never to have
-a balky horse. If horses are haml'-jl prop
erly they will never La!k. After a horse
baa beeu 'foo'ed," as horseu.en very prop
erly say, wheu a good horse baiks, it will re
quire a vast amount ot cautious manage
ment to correct the bad hulk. Horses are
taught to balk by stupid and cruel drivers,
who have really less good s-.ne tlmii the
animals they drive. Many strong and ex
cellent horses are managed to improperly
that they soon become almost incorigible
talkers; whereas, if a driver of ordinary
intelligence had held the reins, tho animals
would have always beeu as true us stecL If
a horse is properly managed he will draw
with all his luiht, trot or run as his driver
may indicate until he drops in his harness
from utter exhaustion.
After a horse has really contracted the
habit of balking, the vice can be corrected
only by kindness and gentle treatment. The
more he is whipped, kicked, clubbed, and
handled roughly, the more obstinate he will
be. Ilenee, throw away whips and clubs,
and let thegentle treatment bear rule. Then
beware of over loading. A person can coax
out of a horse a service that whips and kicks
never can secure. Always provide some
means to enable a (cam to start a heavy
load easily. Avoid stopping if possible
where it will be diffijult to start. It is bet
ter to let a team stop for a moment, ten
times, when haulins a load up a slope, than
to allow it to stop in a place where it would
be difficult to start. The writer once was
accustomed to carry pieces of plank to the
field for the wheels of the waon to re.-t u;
on, while it was to ba loadened with pota
toes, or corn, so that the team would move
off ruadily with a heavy load, that they could
never etart if the wheels had been allowed
to siuk into the ground while the load was
increasing in weight. When a horse bulks
on account of exhaustion, allow the animal
to rest until he has recovered fctrenirtb to
draw his load. Above all beware of too
heavy loads, of impatience, or roughness,
and of over driving.
Peaches should hi picked before too
ripe, sliced towards the centre, so thin that
when dry the slices will not be thicker than
the blade of a table knife. Be very partic
ular and dry thetu a light color. Dark peach
es are always dull sale at hair price or le.-s
than bright ones. Peaches, if not peeled,
should be cut in halves.
Remember, that neither peach nor cher
ry seeds, apple cores or peelings, sugar,syr
up or water, will sell for dried fruit. By
carelessly or intentionally leaving or putting
them in, you will in the price have to pay
tor sorting, where it can be done, and ij.--e
the amount paid for freight on the portion
of no value.
Pears and quinces should be sliced the
same as peaches, and be free from cores and
seeds.
