RAIN. Continued refreshing showers
prevailed in this region during the past
week, which greatly stimulated the growth
vi all kinds of vegetation. Corn and pota
toes lj',k well, and promise a largo yield,
no unfjisecn calamity intervening.
Thanks. We return our thank. to TTon.
W. A. Wallace, late Speaker of the State
Senate, for copies of the first volumes of
"Bates' History of Pennsylvania Volun
teers." The work is gotten up in pretty
pooJ style, and will be valuable as a matter
ot' referetij.-, in the future.
Tltoi T-I'ismNii lias been pretty active.in
this region, (or several weeks past. It is a
very pleasant and interesting pastime, ex
cept when a person is caught up and com
jielled to lie out in the woods without any
covering, a:id wkh several millions (more or
less) of gnats hovering about your head,
ready to puncture your skin at any moment,
Another trial, boys; peiliaps, better luck
next time.
iMi'Ktivi.ME.vrs. iuildir:g operations are
prngres.-ing finely in this place. Messrs.
Weaver Si Belts', and Saekett Jfc Scliry
ver's, new Store rooms, W. M. Shaw's res
idence, and R. B. Taylor's six dwelling
houses, are nearly completed ; while the
jail, Gauiiu's new residence and post-olhce,
and a number of other buildings are in fair
stage of progress. This spirit of improve
ment speaks volumes for the advai.cemeut
and prosperity of Clearfield.
Grain. The wheat and rye crops in this
.county will be unusually good, "we are in
formed. We are gl..d to note this fact, as
it will in a great measure compensate for
the shortness of the hay and outs crops, on
account of the recent drouth. We have no
doubt, if farmers will but properly manure
and lime and till their lands, that just as
good grain and rass crops can be produced
in this county as elsewhere in the Slate.
Will our farmers make a note of this faet?
A Novel Idea. A Clearfield county
Democrat prefers the "Crawford'' to the
"Delegate" system of making nominations,
because under the former -'the whi-ky comes
direct to the voter, v,l.i';l; under the latter
" it goes to a few delegates,." That, cer
tainly, is the strongest argument in favor of
the "Crawford" system, we ever heard.
Well, as the "Crawford" sy.-teiii has been
retained by our Demoeratie friends, we hope
this representative ve-u-f may Lave the good
fortune to enjoy his whi-ky at every return
ing primary election.
That Boy's Fight. Last week we pub
lished an item in reference to the arrest and
fining of several small boys for fighting. We
are informed that the affair was greatly ex
aggerated that it was a mere childish alter
tercation, such as frequently occurs when
children arc at play that no serious injury
was sustained by any one that all were
alike to blame in the matter, and hence no
line should have been imposed on either of
the Lots. As we have no desire to misrep-rj.-a;t
fact, or make undue discriminations
in ai;y ea.-e, we give this explanation for
I 'iOio interested.

Lodged in Jail. One day last week,
two men, named George Killniore and Win
field S. Shipmei, of Huston township, were
lodged in our jail, on a charge of the larceny
ot twelve dollars in money and a hat. Also
Frank Smith, of Wal'aceton, for threaten
ening to kill his brother. Sheriff Pie has
seven boarders, inside the "stone-pile" at
present, awaiting their trial at the Septem
ber term of our Courts.
N. B. NorrisTrude, the bigamist, took
a "French leave," on Tuesday morning last,
and tramped for parts unknown.
The Fourth of July. This renowned
day which affords Americans A first class
opportunity of displaying their patriotism
and evaporating a vast amount of accumu
lated eloquence, generally come at this sea
son of the year. It is very regular in its
appearance, for if it were not we should
never know when to look for it with any
degree of certainty in Clearfield. As an
evidence of its regularity it may be noted
that for about ninety-five years it has not
made a failure. It comes this year, on Tues
day next, and in order to give our "typos"
a chance to celebrate it in a becoming man
ner, no JouitXAL will be issued nest week.
Indecent Conduct. We are informed
that a large number of young men and boys,
for several Sundays past have been swim
ming in Mr. Arehy Shaw's mill-dam, im
mediately opposite some houses. On Sun
day a week no less than U0 visited the local
ity referred to. Their conduct and language
on these occasions, upon the appearance of
the women at the doors of the houses, or in
passing along the road, 'was indecent to the
very lowest degree, such as would not be
indulged in by any class, except, perhaps,
the denizens of the filthy slums in the lar
ger cities.. A repetition of such conduct,
we are assured, will subject the offenders to
a hearing before Justice Porter, or a dose of
shot impelled from an "old Springfield" by
some powder. A word to the wise is t-uf
fieient.
