Co-operative Battar Making.
We Lave investigated and watched the
system of co-operative butter matin? with
great deal of interest and in every instance,
so far as we know it has proven eminently
successful. There are, however, sundry diffi
culties to be overcome in some districts. As
yet no really practicable method of determin
ing the relative value of tniik ha.4 been hit
upon, and in nearly every community there
are more or less careless feeders. Both
quality and quantity of butter are affected
by this circumstance, much more sensibly
than in the case with cheese. The profita
ble disposal of the skimmed milk is a matter
of serious import. Near large cities having
a large foreign population, a considerable
sale of skimmed milk may, by proper effort,
be established ; but as yet the greater pro
portion of it has been worked up into skim
med cheese, for which there is but a limited
d mand ; indeed the present supply is be
lieved to be quite sufficient to meet the de
mand at profitable rates.
The butter factory at Elgin, Illinois.njade
sales of impressed curds last season to par
ties in Chicago, who were experimenting
opon their use in the arts, but with what
special application, or to what extent suc
cessful, we are not informed. All things
considered, there seems but one course to
be pursued with the article, and that is to
carry it back to the farm, and feed it out to
calves or pigs. And to the farmer who is
not wedded to the absurd theory that he
may catry off his crop indefinitely without
making any restitution, this ought not to
afford any discouragement, for we knoir
from actual experiment that veal or young
ur ikji . may De proataDiy made Ironi
skimmed milk and grain, while a very con
siderable amount of manure may be pro
duced for an increased production of butter,
veal, and pork next year, a result even mote
desirable ultimately than any mere increase
of cash income.
A CORREsro.NUENT of the Bee Journal
gives the following new way to swarm bees:
"I had three decamping swarms that left
my apiary. I had hived the first in the
forenoon, on the day it swarmed ; but at
about 4 o'clock in the afternoon it decamp
ed for parts unknown. It got off some dis
tance before I got the looking-glass, but, to
my surprise, the third flash of the sun's
rays with the looking glass made the bees
fly round and round, instead ot" straight for
ward as before, and they immediately set
tled upon a tree. The second swarm came
off in the alternoon. It made no halt to
settle, but started direct for the timber. I
followed it, and brought it down in the same
Way. The third got nearly half a mile away,
flying on the east side of the timber. The
sun being in the west, we could not use the
glass ; but as soon as we got the sun, three
or four fla-hcs settled it also. I have the
