Market Gardening in the Country.
The census often gbows the drift of farm
life more accurately than any partial obser
vation, however minute. It is quite clear,
from the returns' already examiued, that
there is a decrease in the amount of live
stock in the New England and M iddle States
during the past decade, and likewise a de
cerasc in the yield of staple grains, while
there will be bhown a large increase in the
crops of vegetables and in garden products.
This shows pretty conclusively that grain
farming and live stock raising does not pay
so well as some other branches of farming.
The city and village population has increas
ed, and the farmers in the immediate vicin
ity of these large towns are turning their
attention more and more to supplying their
daily wants. They can sell potatoes and
turnips every day iu the year if they have
them, and garden products all through the
summer and fall. There is, however, a
brisk demand for poultry, eggs, milk, calves,
lambs and swine, and they very properly
raise what the market demands.
Safety Rf.iv. A correspondent of the
Country Gentleman gives a plan for a sim
ple safety rein, for use on hard pulling hor
ses. A common jointed snaffle bit is used,
but on it are placed two loose rings, not
large enough to slip over the outer rings on
the bit. To these loose rings the check
pieces of the bridle are fastened, the outer
Tings being used only for the driving reins,
which pass through them and are fastened
at the top of the bead. It will be seen that
pulling on the rein by the driver, draws the
bit up in the mouth, pressing it against the
fork of the lips, and throws the head up
instead of against the breast. The corre
spondent says he has used this contrivance
with success for three years on a mare which
had repeatedly run away before with a strong
curb bit.
A correspondent of the Ohio Farmer
thinks that one great cause of failure which
often occura in the cultivation of sorghum,
is planting the seed too deep. The land
should be mellow to a good depth, but the
seed bhould be covered shallow.
A CORRESPONDENT of Tilton's journal
says that a liberal top-dressing of old leach
ed ashes produced "a magical effect" on
his bed of young strawberry plants set some
months before, and they grew finely after
having been long stationary from drouth.
Bras Bread. Take a sponge of wheat
flour; when it is light ad 1 salt, and a small
quantity of mo!ase., stirring in bran flour
with a spoon until it is as stiff as you can
get it without taking the hands to it. When
it has risen again, put it into well ereased
pans with the spoon, and bake until done.
New Haven boasts of a horse chestnut
tree that blossoms on one side one year, on
the other side the nest year, for six succes
sive years, and then interrupts the regulari
ty by blossoming all over on the seventh
year.
