Narrow Escape. Mr. R. B. McCully
and lady, of Smith's 31 ills, this county, made
a narrow escape from death, on Thursday,
May 25th. Mr. McUulIy attempted to cross
the railroad track at Tyrone, with a horse
and huggy as a train was approaching, but
failing to do so the train struck the bugjry
and smashed it the pieces, while the occu
pants escaped without any serious injury.
This is another warning to persons not to
atteT.pt to cross a railroad track in front of
moving trains.
Give the Printers Fair Play. An
exchange says : "We have a piece of ad
vice which we wi.ih to impress firmly and
indelibly upon the public mind, and that is
to give the printers fair play. J)t) not for
get that it costs something to puff as well
as to advertise, ami never sponge npon ' a
printcT in any way whatever. . It is printer's
ink that makes nine-tenth? of our fortunes;
it. takes xw'tnty to buy ink, type and paper,
and yet, after all this, few arc the thanks
he gets. Give the printer lair plf.y, ana
give up r.ll expectations of gratuitous puf
fing, etc."
Died. We Ifarn from tlin Falls City Ne
brjsk:i,..7ij'ir7, that Mrs. Lircr, wife of
?5r. Alf. W. Southard, died in that place
on Wnlnesday .morning, Njs' l!4th. .Mr.
Southard removed from this place to Fall
City, a little over a year ago, where he. met
with an accident that incapacitated him
from work for a short time. Since then,
however, ha has been getting long very
well, and he and family enjoyed the best of
health. The announcement of the death
of Mrs. S. was a surprise to her many re!a
tivss and friends, and is deeply lcgrctted ly
all. Peace to her remains.
How to Btni.u up a Town. An ex
change hits it when it says the best way to
buiid up a totrn is for every business man
in the place to advertise his business in the
columns of his local paper, and thus present
an array of business houses equal to the
number of houses on the street. It draws
trade to the town, draws emigrant-s. ti the
town, draws produce to the town, draws
money to the town. If a man wants to buy
anything, he goes where he sees the most
men tr3-in to sell that article. If he wants
to foil anything, he goes where the most
men are buying. If a man wants to buy
groceries or sell pro luee,he goes to the bus
iness man that advertises, for he knows
where to find him and what he has to sell.
Assault Lton Sheriff Pit:. On .Mon
day. May 22d. Sher.ff Pi3, went to Glen
ILjpe, for the purpose of arreting James
John-ton, who escaped from jail a short
time Huce. On the way thither, however,
he came across Stigert, who also had de-p-irted
from durance without penuissiou.
The Sheriff arrested Stigert and brought
him to tiiv:i that evening. On YaesJay
morning he again wended his w ty towards
the domicile t;I Joinitn. On approaching
the houe, the Sheriff left his horse some
distance away i.i the woods and jroV)i!ed
on foot. On nearir.g the house he discov
ered Johnston in the yard cutting seed po
tatoes, when he nt once pounced upon his
prisoner to handcuff him. A severe scuf
fie ensued, duiing which Johnston struck
the Sheriff six or seven time? with his fist,
but the latter finally succeeded in scctii I n ig
the piisoner. The Sheriff, during the me
lee, al.-o seccceded in discharging one bane!
of his revolver, which brought some rafts
men, who were working near by, to his a-i
si.-tanee, when he succeeded in putting hob
hies on Johnston. At the instance id' John
ston, the Sheriff sent to a neighbor's hou.-e
r his wife, who so in made her appearance,
hc:; the parly started into the house to get
Smii" clothes for prisoner. On nearinx the
door, the prisoner suddenly leaped inside,
anil at ihe same instant an axe was hurled
r.t th. Sheriff's head, but mi.s.-ed him. The
prisoner sta-ding at bay inside of the door
with an axe, the Sheriff drew his revolver
in the hope that its appearance would in
timidate him, but with no effect. P'.inng
t!ii- Lrict interval the hubbl -s on the priso
ner were cut, when he turned uml .swiftly
run out at tins back part of the house and
made cooj his escape, and has not since
Ixien heard from. The Si eriff was consid
erably stunned fro-n the blows received, so
m teh so tltat it was with difficulty he came
home on th following day; bat he is about
again, and ready for "active service."
