Godet's Ladt's Book continues to lead
the monthly fashion journals, and b as good
as ever. The literature of Godey is never
trashy, nor will any subscriber think her
money foolishly spent when she examines
the book lor herself.
Good Ahvtce. A cotemporary says:
"Now id the time to put every dollar into
circulation." Yes ; don't lock up the money.
A "nimble" or circulating sispence will do
more to make business l-risk, and work
plenty, than thousands that arc under lotk
and key. Every dollar put into circulation
will pay hundreds of dollars of debts in a
very rhort time. Let all remember this.
How to Kill a Town. Underrate your
neighbor's property; withhold your support
from home mechanics and manufacturers
and arlisans; buy what you tieed elsewhere
in preference to home ; and if you are in
business refuse to advertise. If this won't
kill the most prosperous town in America,
it is proof against ingratitude and hard
times. Some persons we wot of should re
member this.
'Die ModKN wei.t," is the title of a r.cw
fashion magazine, published in Uorlin, Ger
many, and of which we have received a
copy. It contained fixteen pages of illus
trations of the different fashions, a fine,
olored fashion plate, a large sheet of pat
terns, and a supplement containing lour
Accident. --A colored man named John
Moulton had one of his legs so badly ciusb
ed, on Monday the TtU inst., as to make
amputation necessary. He jumped from
the train, while it was in motion, at Stiners,
a station in this county on the Tyrone dnd
Clearfield railroad, and striking an embank-
men,' one of his logs was thrown on the
track and the train passed over it, crushing
it as above stated.
HESOfF.D The miners at the Mjrrisdale
Collieries resumed work on Saturday, 3Iay
13th, at the old prices, and without having
gaitied any of the points for which they
struck. A change, however, has been made
in the weigh -master, of no importance in
its effect unon the demand of the men.
Kvery thing is running smoothly, and the
usual amount of coal daily leaves the mines.

Vegetation. Owing to the warm and
favorable state of the atmophore during
the past week, vegetation of all kinds ad
vanced very rapidly. The prevailing dry
ness, however, is somewhat retarding the
oats and gra"s crop?, but with an auspicious
season we anticipate a good y?e!d. Wheat
and rye look well, although s-.iiiewhat in
jtired hy -the late heavy frosts. Corn is just
being planted, and the buckwheat sown.
Some potatoes are up and look thrifty.

a had teet in height, of beautiful pattern
(alter an or'irina! design), and of superior

at th shop of Mrs. S. S. Lid lell, in this
place, by Mr. Niley, one of the best work
men in the State. The monument is a high
ly credit a'de piecu of workmanship, and a
woi thy tribute to the memory of a patriotic
citizen and brave soldier.

From the Counties Around Us.
Centre County. On Saturday, May
13th, while leading a horse into the stable
of L. W. 3Iunson, 3Ir. Jacob Stofel was
kicked by a horse which was standing in one
of the stalls, breaking two of bis ribs. . . A
tree fell across engine No. 14C, during the
Florin 011 Tuesday evening, 3Iay 9th, near
Powelton. demolishing the cab over the
head of Engineer 3Ii!es, who escaped unin
jured. . . . The grain crops throughout the
county are said to look well, with prospects
for a large yield. ... At the renagerie,in
Bellefonte, on Saturday a-wcek, one man's
pocket was relieved of a forty dollar watch
and $10, and another of about $000.
Somerset County. At the Sand Patch
tunnel, on the Pittsburg and Connellsville
Railroad, just after a blast, a mass of rock
fell from overhead and crushed two men to
death, and injured seven others. They were
engaged in widening the tunnel far a double
track. ... On the evening of the 12th,
while tire members of the Good Templar's
Lodge in Somerset male and female were
engaged in laying down a carpet in their
hall, a lamp was upset, the oil running out
over some straw and the flo-ir, and then uni
ting, causing much consternation fo. a short
time, as t!u flsnies cut off retreat from the
room. A boy of 16 picked up the lamp and
threw it through a window, when the flames
were soon extinguished. lie was somewhat
burned, but prevented a horiiblo catastro
phe by his intrepidity.
Indiana Coc.vry. On Monday, May
7th, the house owned and occupied by 31 r.
George Warrer, at what is known as War
rer's 31 ills, in East .Mahoning tp., was to
tally destroyed by ure. The fire is supposed
to have originated from a defective flue. All
the household goods were saved. . . . The
house of John Stewart, in the same town
ship, was destroyed by Ore on Thursday
morning of the same week. This fSro origi
nated from sparks Jailing on the roof. Alt
the househould giodi were destroyed. . . On
Saturday of the same week, the house of
Thomas Duulap, in South 3Iahonirig tp'.,
was also totally destroyed by lire. The
house is-supposed to have taken (ire from a
stove pipe, which passed through the roof.
Loss $1.500 trb insurance. . . . On Sun
day of the same week, the dwelling house of
of E. B. Widdowson, in Green tp., was to
tally destroyed by fire. Nearly all the
household g mds were saved. The fire orig
inated from a defective fire. No insu
ranee. . . . The child of Robert 3Iorris. in
jured soma time since by the falling of a fork
from the hay mow. one of the prongs of
which struck the child on the head, died on
Tuesday, the Dth inst. . . . On Wednesday,
the l()ih inst., Alfred Johnson, of Raynetp ,
accidentally shru himself, hile in the act
of blowing in the muzzle of a gun, to
ascertain if it was loaded.
