Renovating Pastures.
Old pastures are often greatly deteriora
ted in productiveness and quality by the in
coming of inoss. The lighter the soil the
sooner the moss makes its appearance, and
the wider the area it occupies. Wt have
Vnown old pastures made nearly unproduc
tive from the growth. So long as the soil
is abundantly rich with grass food, moss
will not come in ; when that begins to fail.a
class of plants that drewTJifferent elements
from the soil a lower and coaser type of
vegetable growth is produced. The best old
pastures, those that seem to improve with
age, occupy soil that is naturally extremely
rich, deep and moist enough to favor the
grass. On such favored locations pasture
improves with as?, because the turf thick
ens, aud the herbage becomes fine and sweet.
This proeessgoes on for years for a lifetime
and people talk of permanent pastures.
But the best will fail with age, when the
store of plant food is exhausted, unless it
be kapt good by artiGcial means. The law
of growth, maturity and decay holds with
the best pasture as well as with the poorest;
only it requires more time to complete the
cycle.
The most practical way of renovating,
manure and re seed, but as it is not always
desirable to take this course, top-dressing
may le resorted to as the next best expedi
ent. Strong liquid manure Trill keep up
and improve grass lands, and effectually re
strain the growth of moss. For lawns and
small patches of pasture this is the best
means to adopt As a dry manure, nitrate
or soda is one of the best, because it is
readily dissolved and thus placed in the or.'y
available form for appropriation by th.-; grass
roots, in which any fertilizer can be used by
them, and it likewise supplies the needed
elements. Farmyard manure, spread on
the surface, will force a growth for a single
6eason, but u is not a profitable use lor so
valuable manure. Fresh eartii, or that made
from the decay of sods, is one of the most
satisfactory dressings to apply to old grass
laad. The effect of earth alone is remarka
ble and considering the cost and the benefit
this material is most profitable for common
use. American Rural Home.
To Clean Oil-Cloth If you wish to
have them look new and nice, wash them
with soft flannel and lukewarm watsr, and
wipo perfectly dry. If you want them to
Joolr extra nice .alter they are wiped, drop
a few spoonful of milk over them, and rub
them with a dry cloth.
All horses must not be fed in the same
proportion without due regard to their ages,
their constitutions and their work. Because
the impropriety of such a practice is self
evident. Leather covered bits should be substitu
ted for metal ones in winter, since the con
tact of the frosty iron causes ulceration of
the horse's mouth.
