Early Plowing.
Lam! plowed quite early, as soon as the
frost is out and sufficiently dry, mellows
down and becomes ripe for a crop by plant
ing time. How much better it is to have
your own land in fine tilth at planting time,
than only to arrive at that desirable condi
tion when you are laying up your crop.
Your crop, too, will continue much better
at the start, and will continue to grow as
well until maturity.
For all the good that clods do growing
crops, they might as well be oat of the field.
I had a conversation recently with a friend
on this subject, who stated that he commenc
ed quite early in the spring to plow a small
etrip he had lately taken into his field, but
finding his old land plowed very nice, he
kept on a day or two when somcthitg called
him off. The balance of the field was plow
ed just before planting all harrowed.cross
ed both ways, and planted to corn. The
early plowing being but little more than half
the work in planting, on account of its extra
mellowness. All the season he could see the
difference to the very row, in favor of the
early plowing. At maturity it was still
more manifest, being from ten to fifteen per
cent, better. This was common wheat stub
ble upland.
I have plowed forty acres of bottom land
in March, sixty in May, harrowed and rolled
all of it The early plowing was in delight
ful, the other in good order. On striking
out corn rows, the plow in the first plowed
run as in sand or ashes, it was perfectly
mellowed, not a clod on the forty acres that
would have injured a bill of corn, had it
been put there. Every hiil, almost every
kernel, came up quick and made a rapid
growth. The last plowing was what would
have generally been called ia first rate order.
But the whole season through you could see
a marked difference, to the very row, in
favor of the extra mellow land, made by the
early plowing.
For the potato, there is still more differ
ence in favor of the mellow land. I never
yet succeeded in raising a crop of potatoes
on cloddy land, which paid expenses.
There are other reasons in favor of start
ing the plow early. Tho weather is cool,
consequently teams can stand it better. The
farmer, too, will be able to drive his work
instead of being driven by it all the season.
Take time by the forelock, do things thor
oughly. Manage the farm instead of allow
ing the farm to manage you ; and then you
will find farming both pleasant and profita
ble. Ohio Farmer.
Bain is cash to the farmer.
Recording even your own errors will be
of benefit.
The foot of the owner is the best manure
for the laud.
Ground once well plowed is better than
thrice poorly.
When you see a fence down, put it up
if it remains until to-morrow, the cattlo may
get over.
Never keep your cattle short ; few farm
ers can afford it. If you starve them, they
will starve you.
Fanners' sons had better lenrn to hold the
plow and feed the pigs, than measure tape
and eut buttons.
Obtain good teed, prepare your ground
well, sow in time, and pay very little atten
tion to the moon.
Cultivate your own heart aright ; remem
bering that "whatsoever a man soweth that
ehall he also reap."
Weeds that grow unmolested around the
fences, stumps, and stcnes scatter tbeir
seeds over the farm, and are very likely to
grow.
