How to Catch an Owl. Owls are very
destructive to poultry, especially in the
breeding season, and are much more dan
gerous than hawks, inasmuch as they pay
their visits to the roosts in the night. There
is do effectual safe guard against their visits
unless you have the hennery made owl
proof. Most farmers make their roosts un
der an open shed, or upon the trees, which
are as free to birds of prey as hens. Chick
ens are very delicate food for young owls,
"and sometimes a dozen will be missing from
a perch in a single night, and their feathers
and claws be found the next day in a neigh
boring owl's nest. Old hens will be taken
and their heads be eaten" off and the carcass
dropped under thetree, quite too heavy for
the owl to carry off. Not a momenthould
be lost when these depredations occur. Tie
the dead fowl upon the limb or perch, where
it was accustomed to roost, and shut up the
rest of the fowls. The dead fowl should be
tied in a roosting position, so as to seem
alive to the owl. Place a small steel trap on
the back of the hen and fasten it to a neigh
boring branch. The owl will generally make
his appearance the following night, and in
sweeping down upon the back of the ben
will find his claws securely fastened in the
trap. A small rat trap without teeth is the
best. The teeth would be apt to cut off the
legs and claws and release the owL The
trap will often save many days of hunting a
mean, skulking enemy, who only plunder at

Hoofs of Young Animals. We saw
recently an instance of the ill effects result
ing from the neglect to shorten the exces
sively long hoofs of the young horses. A
colt with unusually long hoofs, had in his
play stepped upon some hard substance.and
broken off the front part of the hoot of one
foot to the quick. The accident was atten
ded with some bleeding, -and excessive lame
ess, the poor fellow being unwilling to put
his foot to the ground. Ten minutes work
would have saved the animal much pain,
and the owner might have had the profit of
three months growth, instead of having it
arrested for that period.
But the occasional breaking off a part of
the hoof, is but a trifle when compared with
other mischiefs resulting from the same
cause. When the toe is too long, the strain
on the fetlock joint is greatly increased, and
permanent injury to the suspensary ligament
of the foot often follows. Young horses
frequently have wind-galls, and other evi
dences of sprains, before they are put to
work, and- in ninety-nine cases out of a hun
dred, these are where shortening of the toe
has been neglected. On some gravelly and
stony lands, and hard roads, the hoofs will
wear fast enough as nature evidently intend
ed they should ; but if horses are kept on
good smooth turf, their feet must be kept
short by artificial means. Ohio Farmer.
In a paper before the Ohio State Board
of Agriculture, on fruit and the insects that
work so great damage to most of the fruits,
by Dr. Warner, he said that he would plant
apple trees at a less distance apart than is
usual, in order that the trees might com
pletely occupy and shade the ground, and
when the trees have grown so as to interlace
their branches, he would cut away one half
their number. Land for an orchard should
be prepared by deep cultivation, and the
trees set shallow.
