So Swine Bequire Salt ?
This has been a mooted question with far
mers and breeders for many years, and now
remains as far from a satisfactory Eolation
as when first started ; nome inclining to the
affirmative opinion, and the large majority
to a negative belief. The farmer contend
that animals in a wild state neither require
or have access to it. This is a mistake ;
even in a wild state there are certaio condi
tions of the animal economy, affecting the
health and comfort, which tbe instinct of
the brute creation teaches them how to
counteract. Astringents acids, alkalis,
6alts, ic, abounding in certain earths,
plants and sprigs are sought for and duly
appropriated by the animal. The wild beast
is his own physician, Nature having endow
ed him with the power and means to pre
scribe his own physic, for whatever ailment
the particular condition of his body devel
ops. This instinct, or all wise unseen pow
er, the animal is in a great measure de
prived of in a slate of domesticity ; he is
solely and entirely the creature of roan,
subject to man's treatment, care and pro
vision. His whole physical nature has un
undergone a change ; his appetites are not
the same ; hi food is different, he is mated
with different varieties of his Fpecics, and,
compared with his original type, there is a
wonderful metamorphisis in his confirma
tion. These facts will at once destroy the
theory of tli05e who are inclined to the
negative side of the question just referred to.
While all other domestic animals are reg
ularly supplied with salt, the hog is general
ly neglected. He requires, however, to be
constantly supplied with it as are horses,
cattle, or sheep, and suffers as much when
deprived of it as cither of these. His food
is almost invariably given to him in a fresh
state, and to this fact we may attribute the
presence of trichina and other diseases pe
culiar to swine, which secin to baffle the
most skillful treatment. If salt be net mix
ed with the food, it should constantly be
kept in a separate trough in his sty, where
access may be had whenever the animal feels
inclined to lick or eat it. If farmers and
breeders will try the latter plan, it will af
ford them a good opportunity of ascertain
ing whether or not the hog requires salt, and
also whether it benefits his condition while
living, and improves the quality of his flesh
when prepared for tbe table.
There is another simple method of test
ing the value of salt when given to swine.
Let the farmer breed from a boar and sow
fed on salt, and rear a litter to their full
growth fattened in the ordinary way, and
try the same experiment the same time with
another set, never fed with salt, and let him
note well the result. Tho former will be
healthier, hardier, less subject, to disease,
fatter, better, and the meat will be sweeter
and much more wholesome. If these con
siderations are woith anything to the farm
er and breeder, they are worth, at least, an
impartial investigation.

variably accompanied by extensive derangements
of the stomach and liver, and other abdominal
vircera. There are alvrays more or less obstruc
tions of the liver, a weakness and initable state
of tbe stomach, and great torpor of tbe bowels,
being clogged up with vitiated accumulations. In
tbeir treatment, a purgative. exerting a powerful
influence upon these various organs, is essentially
necessary. There is no cathartio for the purpose
equal to Dr. J. Walker's Vinegar Bitters, as they
speedily remove the dark colored viscid matter
with which the biwels are loaded, at the same
time stimulating the secretions of the liver, and
generally restoring the bea'thy functions ef the
digestive organs. The universal popular y of
this valuable remedy in regions subject to mias
matic influences, is sufficient evidence of its pow
er as a remedy in such case?.
