Maroh Work.
Orchard and Awrswy Planting should be
done as soon as the ground will admit of be
ing worked. The ground ought to have
been plowed in the fall, and then thoroughly
harrowed in spring before the trees are set.
In setting out young trees, clvxse thoee of
good, thrifty growth, and sU-aieht smooth
trunks.
luning and Scrapitig may be done when
the weather is mild. Old trees, which would
be nearly worthless without this renovation,
may, with a little digging and manuring
around, produce a considerable quantity of
fruit.
Tent CaterptTlcrs' Eggs may te easily
ecen now, and removed, thus sav'mg a great
deal of trouble.
Canker- Wormt will ascend during the
warm days, and means should be taken to
Btop them. Strips of tarred paper around
the trunks are ?ood, if the coat of tar is
frequently renewe J. A more expensive way
is to encircle the trees with a trough of
glass or tin, and keep it filled with pe trole
um. Clear the troughs of the dead insects,
for, if left to accumulate they only serve as
a bridge for others.
Poultry of all kinds will be commencing
to lay this month. Geese may be allowed
to sit as soon as they wish. Ducks' egps
should be set under hens if early broods are
wanted, at least until the first of May. The
middle of April is early enough for the ear
liest broods of chickens or ducks, unless es
pecially good houses and yards are prepar
ed Vermin mnst be looked to upon all domes
tic animals at this season. Sulphur if giv
en in Email doses to pigs and poultry is a
useful preventive. Flowersof sulphur in
hens' nesU, and kerosene upon their roosts,
drives them away effectually. Carbolic soap
in strong solution, may safely be used to
wash cattle and sheep with.
Strawberries set out in early spring, will
bear a small crop of fruit the same season,
but it is better for the vines to remove it.
Plant black and raspberries a3 soon as the
frost is out of the ground. The last year's
canes should be cut back to four cr five
feet.
Cuttings of gooseberries and currants
ought to be made and planted as soon as
possible. The oid bushes, when thorouch
ly thinned out, produce much nicer fruit
than when left to themselves.
Gripe Vines do as well pruned early in
March as at any time provided that they
are net frozen.
Spade or Plow in a liberal dressing of
manure between the rows of small fruits;
it pays io the increased quantity and quality
of the next crop.
The hardier annuals may be sown in a
warm sheltered spot. When it is desired
to have them flower early, a few may be
sown in a hot bed. Asters, Balsams, etc.,
may be started in this way.
