the walls and ceiliug frescoed. 'Much cred
it s due to a namber of the lady members

BURNSIDE, Jan. 4, 1871.
51a. Editor: Well sir, Christmas tide
is passed, and so far as I can learn, every
body in tbis neck of Pinelond enjoyed theui
selvei hupely. Nothing unusual transpired
in Burnside on the Universal Holiday. So
we were fain to look abroad tor amusement.
The congregation of the Presbyterian church
at Cherrytree gave a grand festival dinner
and oyster supper. We wandered swiftly
in that direction Christmas morning, with
fine appetites. Havirg (as we always do
on such occasions) fasted the lour previous
davs in order to receive full value for our
75 cents. The display of goods was mag
nificent, all kinds of fancy articles such as
dolls of all sizes, Chinese Punches and Ju
dies, pin cushions of all sizes laden with all
kinds of pins except rolling pins, baby
clothes, renovated Havana boxes, only fifty
ceuts, cradles, trunks, etc. One of tli
goo 1 looking young lady attendants succeed
ed in charming the last haif dollar out of
my pocket for a bottle of "Night Blooming
Cereus," and on the way home the the cork
came out and the perfumery slid quietlv
down into my boots. As a result of the ac
cidenf, my feet xmelt nicer than before, and
I'm going to Leep the "Cereus" on hand
now all the time ; it's cheaper than washing
them in the evening.
The Cherrytree singing clxss gave a
grand concert, and everybody was delight
ed. One piece in particular took the attdi
ence by storm ; it i called "51iserable toe."
It is all about a bridal party, who. getting
tired of dancing, went to playing hide and
whoop. The bride, thinking she was sharp,
went to the barn and hid in the feed chest,
and hollowed "whoop." The teamster
cntne in bhortly and locked the feed box.
They hunted her hieh and low, but no Mary
Ann Lovel. Her "hubby," however,didn't
move an inch to assist in the search ; so
her (Mary Ann's) old dad just grabbed him
hv the loose; skin of the nock and, say he.
"Look here, Sam Lovel. why the mischief
don't you help hnnt our 5Iary Ann ; she s
lost." "No such pnod luck," returned
Sn m wisely. "But if you want to know
I'll just let you into a secret ; I have a corn
on my bip toe, and am in so much misery I
can't move." John Donrherty was there
and he wrote the song. No wonder it draw
tears from our folks at the concert, it would
draw salt water from the parched eyes of a
tomhstons agent ; that song would. tm
And then thev san another new songijust
out) and very popular around here, called
"The American Washerwoman." or ' i"oap
sudi over the Fence." The refrain is "Over
with th white da-hing fam." It wa
com poed and first santr by 5Ir. 5Ilo!y, at
Pine Fiats, during the last stoimy Railroad
meetin? at that place. The direcors not
being able to asree on any proposed route,
the meeting broke up and they amused
themselves by layintr around on the cellar
door, playin; hutnWe pg and jaik stones.
Their linpn becoming soiled they made upa
purse and h'red 5Irt. 5Ialonv to do their
washing. There was a livelv time among
the ud that dav; and 5Irs. M.. at the in
stance of Jai-k P., composed and sang the
above named sons. .Mrs. M. would fling
up a carment hisrh in the air (while an Tndi
ana director turned the wringing machine)
and chant forth :
"Ain't I a cote one. mind my eye,
It takes me to make the sonp 6uds fly.'
And then she would remark to one of the
directors who stood by with an old shirt on,
"Look here, mister,
' Over with tbe white dashing foam.
Empty that tub. you ton of a gun."
Railroad business a little mixed.
Our Lyceum is still flourishing and a new
and interestine feature has been introdued
into the exercise, viz : "Referred ques
tions." A question is rea l at the close of
the debate, and referred to tome individual
who must, it" possible, answer it at the next
meeting. For instance :
President. "When, and by whom were
negroes fiiat introduced into this country?"
Kefcrred to Dan F. "Are you ready Dan?"
Dan. (emphatically), "I am. Negroes wnre
first brought to this country on board a Ger
man steamship in the year 1710. and the
vessel was commanded by Daniel Boone
and Davio Crocket." (Cheers.)
President. "Where were Irish potatoet,
first discovered ?"' Referred to A.
Answer. "In New Jer.ey."
I would like to write somcthins interest
ing, but am really not well to iii'ht, as Sam
Beed wanted my side whisker to stuff a
cart saddle, anf I was. imprudent euough
to cut them off and the consequence is a
tremendous cold.
