handle horses give proper attention to the
feet and legs. Especially is thLi the ca.se on
farms. Much time is apent of a (uorning
rubbing, trashing and 8aioothtn the hair
on the aides and hipf.but at no timearo the
feet examined and properly cured for. Now,
be it known that in this mjc thousand year
old world of ours, tie lect need mere care
than the body. Tbey need ten times as
ranch for in one respect they aro almost
the entire horse. All the groomi:: that can
be done won't avail anything, if the horse
is forced to stand where his ffet will be fil
thy. In this case the feet will become dis
ordered, and then the legs will get badly out
of fix, and with bad feet and bad legs there
is not much else of the horse fit for aaythin?.
Stable prisons generally, are terribly severe
on the feet and legs of horses, and unless
these buildings can afford a dry room where
a horse pan walk around, lie down or roll
over, they are not half so healthy and com
fortable to the horse as the pasture, and
should be avoided by all good hostlers in the
country.

The following singular statement was made
at a late meeting of the American Institute
Farmers' Club, New York. "To prevent
steers from jumping fence, clip off the eye
lashes of the under lids with a pair of scis
era, and the dispoMiiou to jump is as effec
tually destroyed as was Samson's power by
the loss of his hair. The animal will not
attempt to jump a fence until the lashes are
crown again; of this we are informed by
Samuel Thorne, the great breeder of Duch
ess county,who assured us that he had test
ed it upon a pair of breach oxen. As it has
been of great value to him, he hopes it will
be tried by others; no barm can be done by

in winter especially our Northern winter
stimulating food is necessary, but breeders
must bear in mind that birds treated in this
way are always more or less injured by the
use of such food, and will in a short time
Iw useless for any purpo.-e whatever. The
following kinds of food are stimulating.
Cooked meat chopped fine, bread soared in
ale, ground oats mixed with milk, tallow
chandlers' greaves soaked in boiling water,
and hempseed are all stimulating and tend
to make the fowls lay.
A horse should have at least a pail of wa
ter, morning and evening ; or still better,
four half-pailful at four several times in the
day, because this assuages his thirst without
bloating him. But he should not bs made
to work directly after he has full draught of
water, for digestion and exertion can never
go on together.
Damaged corn gives horses inflamation of
tha bowels, and skin diseases.
