Th Beat Feed for Fattening Cattle.
Be L. Hastings, one of the leading dro
Vers from Vermont, in supplying cattle for
the Boston market, gave his experience and
observations in relation to fattening stock,
at a late meeting of the Caledonia county
Farmers Club. lie 6aid the main ot ject
of the farmer is to set the most out of his
fodder. It does not ry to feed grain to a
poor creature, one that does not fake ou
flesh rapidly. Farmers will do well to di -pose
of such stock for what it will brinr-,
and procure animals of good style. Anoth
er important point is, farmers do not feed
heavy enough. He would commence with
as much food as they could bear at first and
then increase. In feeding twelve quarts of
meal, the last four qunrts are worth twice as
much as the first four for fat tening purpo
ses. Some farmers complain that they do
not get pay for the grain they feed out, but
he had noticed that it was only those who
led light that thus complained. Whether
the animal was to be fed a long or a short
time, he would recommend heavy feeding.
He knew nothing better than corn uiea'.
The cob is not worth much, if anything.
Those persons of whom he purchased fat
stock ; who were the most successful and
made it the most profitable, were those who
fed meal largely. If a farmer has potatoes
or other roots, it is well enough to feed roots
altogether. It is important to feed regular
ly and not too often, as the stock will eat
and lie down and ruminate. It is better to
feed cattle but three times a day and she?p
but, once.
Whipping Oxen. It is cruel, acd gen
erally a useless act of barbarism, to whip
oxen, yet many farmers are in the habit of
continually keeping the whip a going. In
stead of inviting the animals to exertion by
proper words, the first intimation that the
poor creatures have from their master that
he desires them to start, is a cut of the whip
or a prick from the goad. This is not only
savage, but absolutely wicked; and unneces
sary. Another practice often snen is that of
pounding and thrashing the oxen because
they don't readily back a load, when they
have not learned to back an empty cart down
hill. There is no doubt that the felling of
many a yoke of oven is depreciated from
tl5 to $25 by being abused in this way.
If animals are to work, they must first Le
taught to work, and when they understand
what is wanted of them, they will cheerfully
comply. But there is a better way to com
municate your desires thai through the
whip. Kindness and skillful management
are far better. Remember that a "merciful
man is merciful to his beast."
Stacks of all kinds ought to be securely
thatched, for thas hay and straw keep qui e
as well as in a barn. At this season they
should be examined, and if the winds have
lifted the covering in spots, it tlioul l be re
newed or pinned down.
