dred of tons of hay lost every winter among
farmers by careless feeding. "We have beon
Mtoauhed sometimes when witnessing the
amount around barnyards and stacks. The
waste is entirely unnecessary, and if it was
made the rule of every farmer not to feed
any kind of stock upon the ground, thous
and of dollars might be saved annually.
There are times, to be sure, where the earth
is frozen dry and clean, but if racks are not
provided full half of the time the hay will
be dealt out either in wet, snow or mud, ami
good portion lost. Portable rack should
be used around stacks and their location
changed every few days. The racks should
be so constructed that the stock can get at
their feed handily, and at the same time so
that the hay cannot be pulled out and tram
pled under foot.
How Much Beef From a Bushel or
Coax. P. C. Compton, Amef , Iowa, asks
the Farmers Club how much beef a bushel
of corn meal will make, fed to two and three
year-old steers, well sheltered. Thinks the
subject important Deacon Rcade had not
the figures, but suggested t hat the amount
would depend upon the condition, age, and
breed of the animaL lie did not believe
that any man ever , got rich making beet
from grain alone ; that the mouey made by
feeding the cattle for market is made off the
grass they eat. Without grass, corn led to
cattle will not bring the feeder fifty cents a
busbeL
Pudding Without Milk pr Egos.
Soak dry b.ead in as little water as possible,
and squeeze out all the water. Add suffi
cient sugar to sweeten, and for a small pud
ding, half a teacupful of chopped suet or
butter, and dried fruit which has been soak
ed over night, or canned or fresh fruit. Mix
well together, adding a little allspice. The
pudding is put into agreaed tin pail.acloth
placed over, and the cover put on. The pail
is set in a kettle containing sufficient water
to come half way up the pail ; boil for two
hours or more for a large pudding. To be
eaten with sauce.
Salt and ashes for Horse.3. Those
keeping horses shjulJ. twice a week, throw
in a handful of salt and ashes. Mix them
by putting three parts of sa!t to one of
ashes. Horses relish this, and will keep
their hair short and fine. It will prevent
bots, colic, &c A little ground sulphur
mixed with salt and ashes, and given once
in two or three weeks is beneScial.
Canned Egos. All who know how to
can peaches and other fruits, aud the can
ning of eggs, to keep them fresh u but lit
tle different. Place tho eggs in the jar in
boiling water, where let it remain until the
inner atmosphere of the jar is about blood
beat, when seal, and romove into cold wat
