Now is the time to think of your heap of
forest mold. If yon. are a goo J farmer your
supply ia ran out. and you are thinking how
to renew it. If yon are a careless farmer
and have never collected leaves or cleaned
out ditches, or dag out open drains, then
the sooner you set your If to work in doing
so the better. Ycur meadows have used up
the fully ripe leaf mold, and the heap of
laat year and those of the previous year re
quire turning. But it may he Lest to com
mence at the beginning and start be descri
bing how a compost heap should be collect
ed, where it should be placed and how it
should be treated to insure a complete
amalgamation of its component parts. First
he surface should be stripped off from a
portion of a field, as close to your wood or
groves or shrubberies as convenient, select
ing an angle as fir outot reach of the noon
day run as possible. The side of the hill
will not suit ; it admits of t oo great drain
age. Neither can you locate your compost
heap to any of your farm building?. A
short distance from the poultry yard, and
in an easily attained position for it occupants
is the locality. The position of the com
post heap being determined, and the sur
face of the soil having Lccn removed and
laid all around the shallow pit, the first
thing to do is to collect the coarse grades
from dykes and around old fences. Should
'hese contain noxious weeds gather out the
intruders, expose them in the sun, and
when dry burn them and add the ashes to
the heap. Before fall you ought to have
quite a considerable heap of ahes ready to
lay in with the forest leaves. Place in the
bottom of the Led a deep layer of leaves,
then a layer of earth, then one of ashes,
then one of grasses and of garden refuse,
then more earth, then more ashes, and to
till your heap reaches five or six feet in
height. Then cap it all round with the
surface mjJs turned grass downward. Lay
the top inclining toward the centre, so as to
catch the moisture, and all is done that is
n2ces.-ary to start a compost heap. It last
year's heap exists, and on well farmed lands
it does, dig it thoroughly, amalgamate the
parts and raise and shorten its dimension.
Do the same with the heap collected th;
pieviuus year, and be careful never to mix
the collections ose of your with thosu of an
other. Forest mold is fit for use after the
third year, as it is more asei'ul as a fertili
zer when used in topdressing than ni; ny
farmers seem to acknowledge. To spread
over newly cut meadows it is of great value.
