The Way to Blanket Horses.
Bat few persons comparatively under

prevent him from contracting a cold. We
frequently see the blanket lolded double
and across the rump and part of the animal's
back, leaving those parts ot the body which
need protection entirely exposed to the cold.
Those parts of the body of a hore which
surround the lungs require the benefit of a
blanket in preference to its flanks and rump.
When we are exposed to a current of cold
air, to guard against any injury from con
tracting cold, we shield our shoulders, neck,
chest and back. If these parts be protected
the lower part of the body will endure a de
gree of cold far more intense, without any
injury to the body, than if the lungs were
not kept warm with suitable covering. The
same thins holds good in the protection of
horses. The blanket should cover the neck ,
withers aud shoulders, and be brought a
round the breast and buttoned or buckled
together as closely as a tnan buttons his
overcoat when about to face a driving storm.
Let the lungs of a horse be well protected
with a heavy blanket, and he will seldom
contract a cold, even if the hindmost parts
of his body are not covered. Many of our
best teamsters protect the breasts of their
horses by a piece of cloth, about two feet
fsquare, hanging down from the lower end of
the collar. This iqn excellent practice in
cold weather, as the most important part of
the animal is constantly sheltered from the
cold wind, especially when traveling toward
a strong current. The forward end of hor.e
blankets should be made as closely around
the breast of a horse as our garments fit our
bodies. Most horses take cold as readily as
men, if not blanketed while standing, after
exercising sufficiently to produce perspira
tion. So long as the horse is kept in mo
tion, there is little danger of his suffering
from cold ; but allow him to stand for a few
minutes, without a blanket to protect his
shoulders and lungs, and he will take cold
sooner than men. Krclt'inge
A New Insect Destroyer. M. Cloez,
who is engaged at the garden of the Paris
Museum, has invented what he considers a
complete annihilator for plant lice and other
small iects. This discovery is given iu
the Revue Jlorticole, with the endorsement
of its distinguished editor, E. M. Caniere.
To reduce M. Cloez's preparations to our
measures, it will be suCcicntly accurate to
say, take three and a half ounces of ijuasHa
chips, and five drachms of stavesacre seeds,
powdered. These are to be put in seven
pints of water, and boiled until reduced to
five pints. When the liquid is cool ; :-train
it, and use with a watering pot or syringe,
as may be most convenient. We are assured
that this preparation has been ino?t effica
cious in France, and it will bo worth while
for our gardeners to exj-eritnent with it.
Quassia has long been used as an insect
destroyer. The stavesacre seeds arc tho
coeds of a species of larkspur, or delj.hinium
and used to bo kept in the old drug stores.
Years ago they were much used for an insect
that found its home in the human head;
but, as that has fortunately gone out of
fashion, it may be that the seeds are less
attainable than formerly. The stavesacre
seeds contain delphine, which is one of the
most active poisons known, and we have
no doubt that a ve.-y small portion of it
would prove fatal to insects. Scientific
