To Purify Dairy Utensils.
Stand on end in a conTenient place for
use, an open-enleJ vessel of uitab!e di
mensions for the size of the dairy, say
from a half barrel to a hogshead. In this
slake some good quick lime, enough to
make a thin whitewash when filled full of
water, and cover to keep out dut and dirt.
The lime will settle, leaving a saturated
solution of lime over it, as vrlear a-s spri"
water. Afier Using the milk-pans, etc.,
wash them ai other uicnsils are wa-hed
and rinsed ; then dip them in.the adjoining
cask of clear lime water, giving them a
quick turn, so that every part becomes im
mersed therein ; set them to drain and dry,
and the purification is complete, without
any scalding process, from the new pan to
the old worn out one. The lime in the
clear water instantly neutralizes the acidity
of the milk vet remaining in the cracks or
seams of the milk vessels, to destroy which,
the process of scalding has been performed.
In the eaue of a very small dairy or of one
cow, the clear water may, if prefered, be
dipped out tT the time Wins, and poured
gentily back again, the lime purifying the
water, and keeping it good all summer.
Of course there will be a little waste and
evaporation, whit h will be made up by ad
ding clean water as needed, the lime settled
in the bottom of the cask keeping up the
strength and saturated solution. Let any
one who reads and doubts its efficacy, simply
try it thoroughly, and he will effect a great
saving in time and cost.
Cultivated Apple Trees. A Corres
pondent in Montgomery county, , informs
us that he can succeed with hisapple orchard
in obtaining a crop as well as nny other
field product on bis farm. He cotu-jiences
his orchard by selecting his trees himself in
the nursery, as a farmer selects his eed
before sowing ; helps to take them u;j, as a
farmer secures his seed ; hauls them home
late in the afternoon or evening ; puts them
in where they are to be planted until the
next day ; has the ground prepared before
hand atid the holes dug ; removes and sets
the trees as he needs the tu in the most care
ful manner, applying two buckets of water
to each tree one when the hole is h.i'.i filled
up, the other when entirely fil'.el, lcavins
the ground around the tree bowl like.
Stakes firmly ; mulches; waters occasionally;
keeps all cattle and hogs out ; and when the
trees are a few years planted, twice a year,
spring and fall, scrape the trunk, scrubs it
severely with cow urine gathered in a tank
for the stable, using about half a bucket to
each tree, aud give them a thorough examin
ation to ferret out any worms, ei. He says
it is not uearly as much labor as any other
crop on the farm. Farmers, do you hcai
that?
The Best Place for A Hor.k. ,;(los
sipper," in the Ri.mil )'rhl, sya : Winter
or summer, except in a stormy time, there
16 no plaee so comfortable for co'u or tired
woik horses as a good pasture lot. To tie
up a horse at night in a narrow cell, with a
plank floor to stand on, is a ?pecie of cruelty
that civilization ought to be ashamed of.
If the poor animal must be confined like a
convict in a dungeon, for pity's sake let him
have his head and give him at least twelve
feet square, with a .soft dry flooa to stand or
lie on. Iu the large c-ities land is worth
more money than hores ; but on the farm
there is no excuse for any such wicked
economy. A.-k the horse what Le wants,
and he will tell you that a place where he
can walk around, lio.do'.v:), and stretch U.s
tired limbs and roll over from side to side,
gives him mo: ease and comfort, altera
day of hard work, than the most cosily plank
stalls, with all the accompaniments of curry
combs, stiff bristle brushes rubber cloths
and dexterous hostlers that can be produced.
Chicken Jei.lv. Cnt up an old hen into
small pieces ; skin ic, and po ir over tlr. re
pints of water ; boil until the hones &!ip o it
from the meat easily, then take cut a!i the
meat, throw back the bones to boil in the
liquor longer, chop meat with the rind of a
lemou, having squeezed the juii-e into th-j
boiling liquor ; put the meat, weii leasonod
intyajelly mould, and when the li.pu.r is
boiled down full one-half strain it upon the
meat in the mould ; nest morning turn it
out of the mould and cut in slices. Do not
throw away the fe-t of poultry, but pour
boiling water over (hom to lake oiT tlieskin.
and then put the feet into the lhjuor to boil.
There is a great deal of mucilagf; in their
feet, and it is excellent both for the jelly and
to enrich gravy for poultry.
To Make a Wasui.no Fluid. Take sal
soda, one pound; unslaked liruchalf'a pound
put them in five quart of water, and boil a
short time, stirring occasionally ; then set
off to cool, and after the liquid has settled,
pour it into a stone juir, and cork for uie.
Soak your white clothes until they are wet
throug; wring out, and s .ap wristbands and
dirty places. Have your boiler or kettle
halt filled with water, and when at scalding
heat, put in one common teaspoonf il of the
fluid. Stir it well, then put in your clothe
and boil half an hour ; then take out, and
rub thrmidi one suds only, rining well in
the blueing water, and your clothes will look
better when dried, than if rubied through
two sudi before loiline.
Drainino should be in the j.Ian of fall
work, for (-oiue thorouai.ly ,l..no every vear
will not be mtith (.-It as a hcarv fspoiisc.
Living springs are often tailed U- .lm-ns,
and thus a supply or water is.?fiir.'(Jat the
outlet, which may be turned to pood aecoutit.
If not useful as a supply of water for the
stock yard, it may rervc a good purpose in
irrigation. Yhen grouud lies lower than
an abundant Fouree of water, there is no
exeUMj for not irrigatiiiff. ? Irrigated ground
must be well worked and drained sr. as not
to remain water-soaked. When irrigation
in well doue, it is the most economical way
possibly of manuring grass.
