Saving Corn Fodder.
To save com fodder to the best advant
age, the corn should be cut up at the ground
as soon as the ear are glazed, and set in
moderate sized stocks large enough to
stand well, and not so large but that the
corn will ripen up and cure well. To make
the stocks stand well, some care must be
taken to set the corn in rarlier small hanJ
fuls, all around alike, so tht stock way he
well balanced. If set in large armful, it is
Very common to get one side heavier than
the other, which is very likely to crowd the
Stock over. It is also very important to
husk the corn and secure the fodder as soon
as both are well cured, and before the late
Jail storms have much chance to damage
either. The snows of November are very
injurious to corn fodder, and espe;iallyso
when they come wilh high winds that drive
the snow all through the stocks. Avery
good way to keep corn fodder, is in rather
email stacks, well put up and secured again.-t
high winds and storms. Except in very
dry seasons, cornstalks that make a heavy
growth seldom got dry enough to stow away
in large mows, but a good deal may be put
on scaffolds and other places where it is
surrounded with air.
Corn fodder, if thus cut, saved and taken
care of, will coma out bright, green and
sweet in the winter, and will be freely con
sumed by nearly all kinds, of slock. It will
then be found one of the cheapest and best
substitutes for liny that is available in A
merican fanning. Hence, the present lariie
crop of corn fodder, if thus managed and
saved, will go far to make up the deficiency
in the hay crop, and be worth millions to
the farmers of the United States. The corn
will also be more than usually abundant,
and be fed, as needed, with the different
kinds of fodder, to keep stock in a good
thriving condition.
Early Calves. A correspondent of the
Country Gentleman says: There is a prood
deal more depending on an early start than
is generally supposed ; yet every farmer who
tas raised stock must be aware of the ad
vantages attached to a calf or a colt born in
March or April, over one not comming into
existence till June. The early youne ani
mals become strong against their first winter,
and go through the cold spells without the
check those that are younger aud tenderer
receive, and having gained a good, clear
start, they will never lose it, and it is the
same with lambs, pigs, and young poultry.
How attentive to this matter should those
be who posesses highly bred stock, for if it
is worth consideration with good common
stock it must be of immense importance to
those who breed animals coining to be worth
as many thousands as the average grades
are hundreds. In Kt gland the winters arc
much milder than in our Northern States;
yet tbia ia aoviouiAy ctAidiocL uU ovory
Variety of live stock, for the first winter is
the most critical period of agricultural ani
mals' existence, and when the young stock
is brought to grass at about fourteeu months
old plump and fat as they can be, to be
perfectly healthy and growing, there, is an
end to all anxiety concerning them.
Aboct Potatoes. Not a little discus
sion has been indulged in by writers in the
Various agricultural journals respecting the
proper time to dig, and the proper way to
care for potatoes af;er they are dug. Our
opinion with regard to ditging is that when
the vines are dead, if this occurs before the
frost kills them, the sooner the potatoes
are dug, the better. They are then .suppos
ed lobe ripe, and after a potato is ripe, if
allowed to remain in wet earth iu quality
is harmed. If the vines are killed by the
frost before the tuber is ripe, wc should let
them remain in the ground as long as the
frost will allow with entire safety. Potatoes
ripen if they do not grow, after the vines
are thus destroyed. As to subsequent care,
the mode adopted by the best growers is to
put them immediately in a cool, dry cellar,
in bins raised about six inches from the
ground, and not over three or four feet
wide, with slat-bottom and sides, so that
the air can circulate freely through the mass.
In this way, unless they are poisoned before
putting in the cellar, potatoes can be kept
from August to April.
Feeding on tub Road. Many persons,
in travelling, teed their horses too much and
too often, continually stuffing them, not al
lowing them time to rest and digest their
food; of course they suffer from overfui
ness and catrying unnecessary weight.
Horses should be well fed in the evening,
and not stuffed too full in the morning, and
the travelling should be moderate on star
ting with a horse having a full stomach. It
a horse starts in good condition, he can go
twenty or twenty-five miles without baiting.
This is evident, when we consider the time
necessary to accomplish this spa.ie with
tolerable speed. On the contrary, with a
heavy load and a bad road, a horse would
only go eight or ten miles in that time.
Why cannot horses travel half a day without
eating, ts well as to work that time on a
farm? If there be more exertion on the
road it is a reason against frequent feeding
at that time. American Veterinarian.
Cows. With the cool weather, butter
maVing and packin.? demanJ the attention
of dairy-womon. The cows should be fed
pumpkins, without the seeds, with some
bran or meal to increase the flow of milk .
They require salt ami abundance of fresh
water. A cow should never go thirsty, nor
lave to travel far for water ; it checks the
milk secretion more than most people are
aware.
Seeds are to be secured. Peach and
other stone fruits are to be mixed with
earth and exposed to frost during winter.
Peach stones are usually strewn thickly
upon a bed and spaded in.
Swixe. IJepin to increase the feed in
quantity, and to improve the quality. Feed
any old corn which may be left over, always
ground and cooked, if you woul 1 feed with
economy.
