Eevival of Peach Trees.
A discovery of ro small moment in the
interests of agriculture, lias been made by
Dr. Geo. B. Wood, and communicated by
him to the American Philosophical Sccietr,
of which he is President. Peach trees in
the vicinity of Philadelphia, after producing
a few crops, not only cease bearing, but per
ish themselves in a short time; whereas
their natural life is fifty or sixty years, or
more. The cause of this defective power of
growth is believed by Dr. Wood to be owing
to a deficiency of potash in the soil, and he
assures that if this alkali be supplied to the
tree so that it shall reach the roots to be
absorbed, the fruit bearing power is restored,
and the tree itself, if prematurely perishing,
is revived. Believim; with most persons
that the cause of decay lay in worms at the
root ot the peach tree he put in operation a
plan which he had seen his father perform
more than fifty years before, viz : of digging
around the best of the stem a hole four or
five inches deep, scraping away all the worms
that could be found at the juncture of the
stein and roots, and filling the hollow thus
made with fresh wood ashes from the fire,
which, of course retained all their potash.
This was done in the autumn of 1863 ; and
with a result, in the following spring, at
which he was himself astonished. The trees
appeared to have been restored to all their
early freshness and vigor; they put forth
bright green leaves, blossomed copiously,
and bore of fruit such as they had never
borne before, many of the branches break
ing down under the load of peaches. Dr.
Wood, in reflecting on these results, and
noticing that several trees treated had no
worms, came to the conclusion that we must
look for an explanation to .some other cause
than the destruction of a few worms, and
this cause he believes to be the ashes, the
potash of which being dissolved by the
rains, had descended along the roots to the
rootlets, and r resented to them the very
food for want of which they were dyinj.
Decaying apple trees bearing stinted and
inedible fruit have been revived by a similar
process, and with the like results. AH of
Dr. Wood's orchards give promise of am
abundant supply of fruit this season.
To Peal Peaches. The following is an
excellent plan to save trouble as well as con
siderable of the best part of the peach,
which is usually thrown away when a knife
is ustd in peeling them : Make lye as strong
as possible of wood ashes and soft water.
Fill a kettle with the lye, and when boiling
rapidly drop in eighteen or twenty peaches,
and take out again almost immediately, and
immerse them in a pail of cold water. Take
one in your hand, and the rind will slip off
entirely, leaving a round, beautiful yellow
ball ; throw it immediately into another pail
of pure water, and so proceed until all are
d.n.. This process will not injure the fla
vor of the finest peach, and once tried, the
old-ashioned way of peeling with the knife
will not be adopted. If the lye is not strong
enough, put into the kettle two dipper-fulls
of clean wood ashes. This is a splendid
way to rid small onions ot their jackets, pre
paratory to pickling them, also for peeling
tomatoes.
