Keeping Grapes Under Ground.
A correspondent of the Gra Ctdturxst
says: Many years ajro, wliib in the nursery
business, a customer wanted some vines of
ma, and while they were Iting dug up he
asked me if I kept any grapes over winter.
This was in March. Of course he got a
negative reply. '"Well," said he. "when I
come next week for trees 1 will bring you
aome aloug." The thing .ecnid but a joke
to uie at the time, but of course I thanked
him for the kind offer. True to bis promise
when he came a week or ten days thereafter,
he brought me eon:e. Not a few berries,
as might have been expected, but at least
five pounds.- The were Isabellas and Cat
awbas, perfectly plump, sweet and fresh
although mostofthe berries had dropped
from Iheir stems. With the exception of a
very slight earthy taste, they were certainly
excellent
The question, of course, was asked, how
do you keep them thus ? The reply was. that
in the fall, as late as the cold would admit,
they were gathered in a clear day when per
fectly dry ; a box about eight inches deep
was taken ; a layer of green leaves was t alt an
from the vines and laid on the bottom ', on
these a layer of grapes, then a layer of leaves
again, until the box wjs full, fiuishing with
a layer of leaves. Put the lid on tight, and
bury deep enough to escape the frosts of
winter. Of course it must be where water
cannot settle into the box. The stems of
those grapes were quite fresh when given to
me. The man told me his father-in-law had
kept them thus for years.
To this, the editor of that journal adds:
We have often dug up branches of grapes
cn layers, late in the fall, when all the
grapes on the vines had been frozen long
ag j, and found them plump, sweet and fresh.
We do not doubt the method is a good one,
and worth a trial.
To Glt Scbplus IIo.net in Common
Hives. Farmers who keep bees in the
common hives may obtain twice as much
purplus honey as they usually do if they put
on more boxes for it. The entire top of the
hive should be covered with them, and the
passage ways to thera are made much larger
than they usually are two two inch auger
holes to each box the boxes large enough
to hold ten pounds.
The spare honey boxes if made of thin
toards should be covered wi;h another box
made of inch boards, both of which should
fit to the top of the hive. There should be
glass ends or sides to the small boxes by
which their condition an be examined, and
when they or anv of them are finished, fillod
and the honey cupped over, it should be
removed, and its place supplied with an
empty one. As soon as the fir.-t hard frost
in the fall occurs, remove them all. whether
filled or not, as the bees will at once carry
all that is not capped over, down into the
body of the hive. It is not wanted there,
as any swarm that has honey in the small
boxes will have enough to wiuteron. Swarms
will carry honey into surplus boxea for the
want of room below and not before.
