Selecting Calves for Milkers. A
writer in one of our exchanges says : "The
points tht indicate the good cow are dis
cernable in thecalf, and why not? This may
stagger some dairymen, tut that is just
what we wish to do. This wholesale slaugh
tering of calves in the spring is wrong. A
calf will ihow a good milk mirror as well as
a cow, a rich creamcolored udder as well as
a cow, and a healthy look and a stror.g loin
as well as a cow and these points make up
a cow ecry time. Let the breed be what it
may, this is oar expcrieoce in the matter.
A calf that is worth ten or fifteen dollars
should not be killed for its mere hide, for
the lack of judgment in selecting."
Grafting the pear o.v the apple. J.
J. Thomas says that grafting the pear on the
apple stock occasionally succeeds with some
varieties. We have seen the Seckel doubled
in size by working on the apple, at the same
time that its quality was lessened. But the
union is imperfect, and the graft generally
breaks off in a few years. Some varieties
do tolerable well for a time, but we cannot
recommend the ptactice, except to such as
inert !y wish to amuse themselves with un
successful experiments.
Manure is never so valuable as when it is
fresh. It then holds in association not only
all the fixed soluble substances natural to
the solid excrement, but much that is of
great value found only in the liquid. It is
in a condition to quickly undergo chemical
change, and the gaseous ammonical products
are double those resulting from that which
had been withered in a heap out of doors
for several months.
The Diehl wheat, which has of iate been
extensively introduced into Michigan, is
said to be peculiary liable to sprout and grow
in harvesting, when the weather is damp
and moist, as it has been this year in that
state ; and, in some cases, the shocks on
whole fields of forty acres are almost green.

Court, the well known breeder of Chester
White swine, of Battle Creek.Mich., writes,
the Prarie Farmer that he has found a tea
spoonful of pulverized copperas, mixed with
an equal quantity of sulphur, fed iu the
night's meal, for three days, effective iu this
disease.
Black Knot. Cut it out at the first
appearance, and burn. No doubt insects do
find a lodgment injt, as they will in any
oft part of the tree, but they are not the
canse. It is a fungus which should not be
allowed to mature and multiply.
Successful farming is made by paying
attention to small things. The farmer who
does his best, earns his money with best ap
preciation, and uses it with best result.
Such men are the salt of the earth.
