As the day of election is rapidly approach
ing, it is the duty of every citizen to see
that his mae is on the Registry of voters.
Now is the time; two weeks heuce it will be
too late.
Vermont led off on Tuesday, September
6th, with the first of the fall elections. The
entire Republican State and Congressional
ticket has been elected by the usual majori
ty. Now for Maine.
Tb census returns of New York city
continue to expose the frauds practiced . Iy
its virtuous Democratic rulers. In pome
districts the vote exceeds the population ;
in others it nearly equals it, and in others
it is more than one-third of the population,
showing in all instances frauds of the most
glaring nature.
ITori. Samuel F. Cary, labor demagogue
and representative of the "horny-handed"
element of our workingmen, has been nom
inated for Congress by . the Democracy of
the Second Ohio district. - In his speech
acceptiog the nomination Mr. Cary avowed
Limself a free-trader and a repudiation ist, a
fact winch ought to settle his fate with the
workiogmen. - .''-
In another part of., to day's paper, we
publish the call for a mass meeting, at . the
Coart House, in this place, on Wednesday
tvcnini?,Sepiember28th. Hon. O. W. Sco
fluld, W. E.; Lathey, Esq,, our candidate1
for Assembly, lion. Saiu. Linn,' II. B.
Swoope, Ej., and other speakers,' will be
present to address the people. A full at
tendance is requested.
A Democratic Boston paper fears that
"many a colored man of quick parts and in
telligence, but whose ambition far outruns
his knowledge, is destined to b ruined by
the temptation of party politic." Likely
enough. ' Many, a white' man of the most
orthodox" Democratic school,' and without
Riich quick parts or intelligence, has been
ruined in the same way.
An irreverent Democratic editor says :
"Senator IWels was a preacher, and most
of the colored office seekers, especially those
who are candidates for Congress, are preach
ers. Having learned the art of public talk
ing, they conceive themselves to be peculiar
ly qualified for Congressional service, in
which talking always takes precedence of
acting." There might be worse charges
made against a people than their disposi
tion to entrust political power to preachers.
If the Democracy always did the same the
chucterof their representatives in Con
gress would be immeasurably improved.
. It js a great satisfaction to know that the
publie debt decreased at the rate of $333 a
minute every minute of la.st month. It is
much more pleasing and satisfactory to
know that the debt of the nation has been
decreased since the first of March nearly as
much as the entire year preceding. During
the first year, of President Grant's adminis
tration, the reduction wa3 nearly $87,000,
000; during six months this year the reduc
tion has been a little over $32,090,000. It
is fen r ful to contemplate where onr debt
would now stand had Seymour and his fol
lowers been hoisted to the position now bo
ably filled by Grant and his Cabinet.
The leading Democratic organ in the
West, the Chicago Times, thus slanders
United Germany and its King in a recent
issue:
One o! the canting Radical sheets says
that in "the present conflict between the
Gerrr. ins and the French there is a broad
contra-t whieh we have not seen noticed.
The French marched forth at the beginning
of the war, relying upon their own strength;
on the coutrary, the Germans have con
stantly recognized the superintendence of a
divine l'rovideuce. King William, in his
latest telegram, does not forget to ascribe
praise where it belongs, saying 'what a
. course events, with Gixf r,ui,lance, have
taken.' " This is good. William Rex has
about as ranch belief in God as have niue
tenths of his countrymen ; that is, no God
at all. The amount with which a God is
believed in by this hoary old inGdtl would
not be sufficient to constitute a Deity as Urce
or as powerful as an earthen doll which one
could conceal in the palm of his hand.
In another paragraph it charges the Prus
sian army with cowardice, and its leaders
with a reckless disregard of life, " and says
that to conquer Prussia France requires not
as many men as its rival, but at least one-
half as many. No wonder that the Germans
of America are severing their connection
with the Democratic party.
THEtFBENCH PEUS8IA5 WAE-
Strasbcbo. September 8, via London,
September 10. The siege of Strasburg con
tinue with great vigor, and the Prussian
are making the greatest efforts to secure its
reductiou. 4,000 Baden troops arc working
day and night in the third line of trenches,
quite near the city, and under constant fire
from the defenses. Over 2,000 citizens
have been killed. The scream of the shells
can be heard five miles. The beautiful
Cathedral has been partly destroyed. There
are now over five hundred cannon bearing
on the citadel, a&d 40,000 Baden troops are
ready to enter as soon a the walls are broken.
Over 20,000 refugees are within the walls,
suffering all the terrors of the bombardment
The fortifications are slowly burning. The
Germans captured have their heads cut off
and stuck on poles. Hundreds of the Ger
mans expelled have been killed between the
fires of the two parties. The city is in flames
at tweuty different places, and the rabble
are pillaging the bouses and making destruc
tion of everything they can lay hold of.
There are daily thunder storms and the
Rhine has risen, driving the inhabitants
from the cellars. The people are fighting
for places in the sewers to escape destruction
from the shells poured by hundreds into the
streets. Six hundred citizens have been
buried by the falling buildings. Every night
the horizon is lurid for mi!e, like a mimic
sunset with the blazeot'the Btden batteries.
Horse flesh is the only meat to be obtained,
and the inhabitants are on the verge of star
vation. Awful scenes are witnessed. Many
citizens are killed in bed, and the comman
der shoots at once all who talk of surrender.
There is mob rioting rightly, and demanding
the surrender of the city, which has not
fired a gun since the 6th. It is under fire
from three sides. The sluiees - which fur
nished the city with water are destroyed,
thereby adding to the sufferings of the peo
ple. It is known that 200,000 Cbassepots
are stored in Strasburg. An immediate sur
render is predicted. There are only 7,000
regular troops in the city.
. Sedan, '"September 9. There are now
marching on Paris five corps d'armee. The
corps of the Crown Prince and the Bavarian
corps left Rejourat five o'clock. Tbe other
corps are all ordered to take their respective
positions, ten leagues from Paris by the 4th
instant.
Berlin, September 10. The following
dispatch, dated at Prussian headquarters at
Rheims last night, was received to-day:
"More than 25,000 French prisoners were
captured in front of Sedan before thecapitu
iatioo. By the capitulation 83,000 prisoners
fell into our hands ; of these 14,000 were
wounded. Four hundred field pieces, inclu
ding seventy mitrailleuses, one hundred and
fifty siege guns, ten thousand horses and an
imiteiise amount of war material were surrendered."-
Paris September 10. -The afternoon papers
report the following : The Prussians have
demanded the surrender of Laon, and the
French commandant opened the gate and
the Prussian officers and soldiers entered.
When they were well inside, the French
commandant fired a mine, blowing up the
citadel and killing and wounding a great
number of tbe enemy.
LATEST.
The Prussians a'tacked Toul, on Satur
day, but were repulsed at all points. They
also attacked Montiuedy and were repulsed.
Melz stiir holds out. The Prussian advance
is within about nine miles of Paris.
A Berlin telegram says;' that a dispatch
from the American Government,. . expresses
a hope of a cessation of hostilities in view of
the dethronement of. Nanoleon. The dis
patch was forwarded to Kinff William bv
sreuial courier.
A London dispatch says, that the Prus
sian army has been halted twenty-five miles
from Paris, at the special request of Bin
inurk, to consider Russian and Austrian
propositions for an armistice.
. Lawlessness in Kentucky. "
One of the items in Democratic political
capital this fall will be the assumed lawless
severity of Republican State Governments
in the.South and all along the border.. But
aside from the disproof growing out of the
fact that North Carolina was carried by the
Democrats, is now the alditional fact that
Governor Stevenson, of the intensely Demo
cratic State of Kentucky, has been led to j
offer a reward of $250 for the .apprehension i
and conviction of persons who have engaged
in burning the farmhouses of Republicans in
Woodford and Franklin counties, and $500
for the arrest and conviction of the white
murderers of negroes in the same counties.
This really amounts to nothing as a means
of protection. While terror reigns and the
life of the informer is bai dly worth insuring,
who will bring an accusation for $250 or
$500 against unscrupulous assassins, banded
together for purposes the most felonious?
The persecuted Republicans of Kentucky
are entitled to a protection somewhat more
complete and efficacious than the offering of
these petty rewards. But the fact that they
are oflered affords immeasurable evidence
that there is an organized system of terror
ism in various parts of the South.
The difficulty of obtaining supplies of food
must be one of vast and growing importance
to both the contending armies. Huddled
within a very few square miles, there now
nightly lie on their arms a million of French
and German soldiers. At the moderate
estimate of four pounds of average consump
tion a head each day including all needful
articles of diet the enormous quantity of two
thousand tons daily is required to feed these
gigantic hosts, who comsume while they do
not produce. In a month this amount swells
to sixty thousand tons. We must remember
meanwhue, that according to the accounts
received from all Darts of France bvtha
j .v
Minister of Agriculture, the averae vJM.t
of rye and corn will be about one fourth less
tnan usual, itie droutn is responsible tor
fie failure of other crops. It is said that
never within the memory of man, not even
in 1856, has the Loire been so low as at this
moment. Of course, this State of things is
like a two edged-sword that cuts both friend
and foe. There connot be a doubt that if
the war continues many weeks this ques
tion or tood will become as serious aod as
nrecnant of momentnn nnun.,...
question of men and ammunition.
Democratic Election Frauds Th
strong hold of the Democracy, in the present
campaign, is "honesty and political purity."
This is the crv that will, for a time, rine
luiuugnuui ihiiu. j-ui unionunately
their record is against them. Of late they
have been rather limited in their opportuni
ties, but have managed to flourish, in their
peculiar way, in different election districts
'tn larger cities. New York has been
the chief point tor the display of election
frauds, but the census returns are beginning
to develop the same thing in Philadelphia,
It is well known that the number of voters,
as compared to population, in anv eomtnuni-
of Philadelphia, out of 16,703 white popula
tion, there were polled a total of 8,477 vofes
crone in three of the white imputation. This
is rather a strong dose of honesty.
A Little of Everythiag.
In Canada a man aged 106 has jus eloped
with another man 'a wife.
The population of Rideway, Elk county,
is a little over five hundred. .
A Lyox.fi ve feet and a half long has been
killed in North wood, N. H., much to the
relief of the timid.
President Grant's - administration pays
more of the public debt in ono month than
Andrew Johnson's did in a year.
A Gallant young gentleman informs us
that he is justified in calling his sweethart
"honey" because she is be-loved.
Poverty, ignorance, crime, sterility, and
popular degradation and misery are the curses
that free trade entails on a country. .
Chicago had a $2,500,000 fire on Sunday
night, in which three persons perished:'
The insurance amounted to $1,500,000.
The losses by the great fire in Calais, Maine
reached $700,000, which is more than the
total valuation of that town ten years ago.
Any voter who changed his residence last
spring from one -election district to another,
should see to it that he is properly register
ed. Celery salad is said to be the most healthy
of all and is used with good results in cases
of jaundice, neuralgia and nervous com
plaints. In court at Easton, last week, William H.
Good was convicted on a charge of practicing
medicino unlawfully. Sentenced to pay a
fine of $ 100 and costs. Liok out "quacks."
It is noticeable that, of the three candi
dates for Governor before - the New York
Republican State Convention, Messrs.
Woodford, Greeley, and Curtis all are edi
tors. A census taker in the District of Quincy,
Mich., has succeeded in finding a man who,
although married for several years. had never
been curious enough to ask 'he maiden name
of his wife.
A chango has taken place in the nomen
clature of the prize ring. The phrase "dealt
him a stunner in the bread basket," has been
superceded by "tired a tuilrailleur in his
commissary department."
An original portrait of Martin Luther, by
Lucas Cranaeh, it is said, has recently been
discovered in perfect preservation among a
mass of rubbish in a passage adjoining a Pro
testant Church in the small village of Rich

rible afflicted by that scourge, the ague.
They are building a new court House, and
the contractor is repuired to put sir grains

It is stated that, at the battle of Woerth,
an officer of the cuirassiers had his head car
ried off by a ball. Notwithstanding, the
body remained upright for a short time, and
for about one hundred metres the dicapita
ted horseman appeared as if he was charg
ing the enemy.

There is in Cincinnati a man named Fred
