" 'Tis plain to me," said farmer's wife, "TLose boys will make their mark id life ; Tbey never were made to handle a hoe And at once to college ought to go. There' Fred, he's little better'n a fool. Bat John and Henry must go to school." "Well, really, wife," quoth farmer Drown, As he set his mug of eiderdown, "Fred does more work in a day for me Than both his brothers do in three. Book larnin' will uever plant one's corn, Nor hoe potatoes, snre's you're horn, Nor mend a rod of broken fence ; For my part, give me common sense." But his wife was bound the roost to rule, And John and Henry were sont to school, While Fred, of course, was left behind, For his mother said he had no mind. Fire years at school the students spent; Then iuto business each one went. John learned to play the flute and fiddle, And parted his hair, of course, in the middle; While his brother looked higher than he And hung out a sign," H. Brown, M. D." Meanwhile at home their brother Fred II ad taken a notion into his head ; So he quietly trimmed his apple-trees, And weeded onions and planted peas ; While somehow, either by hook or crook, lie managed to read full many a book, Until at last his father said He was getting book laming into his head, "But, for all that," added farmer Brown "He's the smartest boy there is in town." The war broke out, and Captain Fred A hundred men to the battle led, And when the rebel flag came down, Went marching home as General Brown. But he went to work on the farm again. And planted corn and sowed his grain, Ke-shingled the barn and mended the fence, Till people declared he had common seuse." Now common sense was very rare, And the State House needed a portion there; So the "family dunce" moved into town, And people called him Gc vernor Brown, And his brothers who went to the city school Came home to live with "mother's fool." Canning Fruit. Like many others, I tried, again and again to seal fruit cans so as to keep the fruit without molding upon the top. I was partic ular in following directions in general use, but found that my cans, when cold, would not be more than two-thirds full, and in a fewdaysawhiteiuoldappeared upon the top. I finally appealed to a friend who, I knew, canned large quautities tor her own use. She showed me fruit over a year oIJ, quite fresh, the cans full, and no mold. I at once adopted her plan which I have since followed with great success. I have no interest in the manufacture of cans, and believe that every one should do his own advertising, but I prefer that kind in which you have only, the can, glass cover and rubber to use. Fruit can be kept just as well without, as with, sugar, and those sealed up for pies are letter without anj, as they will retain their flavor far better. Tin cans or kettles lined with porcelain, so as to preserve the most perfect flavor of the fruit, are the best. While my fruit is being sealed I put a gill of cold water in each can, and fill up with Lot water, putting the covers and rubber alio into hot water. The fruit nted not be cooked only heated to the boiling point un less in preparing pears or quinces, or some other bard fruits, that may require more cocking, and then only just so that a straw may be rased through always being careful to have juice enough to cover the fruit. As oon as boiling hot, empty a can and 5!1 ; then another, or as many as can well he at tended to. Let the cati3 stand open until you can comfortably bear the hands upon them. Mean while more fruit may be hea ted. Get thick writing paper in round pieces the aize of the top of each can, and when the contents of the cans are cooled, slip a piece over the top of the fruit in each can, and at once fill up on the top of the paper with boiliug juice saved for the purpose, and put on the covers as soon as filled, according to the directions given. I often seal up cherries and tomatoes, only for winter use, in one gallon stone jars that are small at the top, prepared just the same as for glass. Leave off the covers, seal with melted rosin, adding a little tallow. Try it on a piece of cloth, if too brittle, add more tallow, and viceversa. Cut a paper also for the top of the jar, just soil will come over the edge, and dip a piece of thick cloth into the resin, only upon one side, spread over the jar and tie down ; now, with a spoon, dip and spread on the hot resin, until entire ly covered, pressing down the sids with the hands dipped in cold water. When cold, if the jar is air ticht, the cover will be de pressed a quarter of an inch or more. But if it is level, then you must seal it over again. Thoe who can common sour cherries will find them greatly improved by first draining off all the juice, and then covering theta with water scaM and drain off, and cover over again for sealing, canning, preserving, or drying. Farm and Fireside. Cough is Horses. A cough is rather a ymptom than a disease. It is often caus ed by the irritability of the air parage?, oc casioned by indiscretion in treatment of in fluenza, distemper, and disease of the res piratory apparatus. It is also one of the effects of hver di-K-as-, and sometimes of worms. Too much dry fodder, especially chaff, often aggravates a cough. Carrots and other roots and green feed- may be ad vantaeeonsly used. Give your horse a warm stall, with bedding a foot deep, with moist cut feed, a little laxative medicine and not much hard work.
