I.itiT. I). L Ferguson, Assistant U. S.
Marshal, finished the census of his sub-dis-trkt
on Saturday last. Messrs. Bard, Ir
win and Brenner, are well on in their work,
and wi'd be through by the time fixed 1st
September. Girard and Covington are a
little behind Mr. A. L. Hoover having
only commenced on them last week, but as

in tbe time allowed.

To Parents. The Clearfield Academv.
under the auspices of Prof. Harrison, is in
a flourishing condition. If you want your
children well educated send them to the
Academy.
The Fike-ci.AY inania is prevailing ex
tensively in this neighborhood. Some very
geod clay has been developed, and no doubt
an extensive and profitable business will be
the result. There is enormous wealth in
our mountains. It only needs enterprise
and perseverance to bring it out.
Life Insurance. In to-day's paper will
be found the advertisement of the Amicable
Mutual Life Insurance company, of New
York. The advantage of Life Insurance is
becoming more apparent every dav. and
hence its popularity with all classes of the
people. Ihe Amicable las a zood renu
tation, and its liberal term commend it to
the- attention of the public.
Ci.e irtFiELD Case. Isaiah BlcPonald,
of P enn township, in this county, was in
dicted in the Quarter Sessions of Northum
berland county, last week," for "larceny as
bailee." John McCraiken was the prose
cutor. It appears that McDonald was em
ployed to run a raft down the West Branch
from Clearfield to Marietta. He run into
temptation and out of funds on the way
down, and concluded to sell the raft at Nor
thumberland to Chamberlain, Fnck & Co.,
for which he received the sum of $08.3,60,
divided with a -conitianton and left. The
defence argued that the raft did not belong
to McCracken after it had started down tbe
riTer, but to tbe purchaser Mr. Henry
Swann, and therefore the indictment was
wrongly laid with McCracken as prosecutor,
but the counsel for the Commonwealth, J.
Mcrill Linn, and the Court were of the
opinion that the property did not rest in
Swann until the raft reached its destination.
It was part (if the contract that it should be
Ic'ivered, and of course the raft would be
the sellers' until the contract was fulfilled.
The jury at C o'ciock brought in a verdict
of guilty, and Isaiah McDonalJ was senten
ced to two years imprisonment at hard labor
in the eastern Penitentiary.
This will be a lesson to jobbers, and learn
them that it is a serious business to attempt
to sell a raft entrusted to them under a con
tract to run it to market.
