To Train a Horsi lo stand. ine American Stock Journal contains the fol lowing directions: Take your horse on tbo barn floor and throw a strap over his Lack and fasten it to his right fore foot ; lead him along and say 'whoa,' at the same time puil down the strap, which throws him on three feet and makes him stop suddenly. This is the best way know to teach whoa, though you can put on the war bridle, and say whoa, and gWe him a sharp jerk, that will stop him about as soon as the strap to his foot. Then put him in harness, with the foot strap as directed to do under the head of 'training to harness,' and drive him up to the door. The moment he undertakes to move, "ake his foot and say whoa. Get in your carriage and get out again'; rattle the thills ; make all the nobe getting in and out you can ; gWe him to understand, by snatching his foot each time he moves, that he must stand still until you tell him to go ; and after a few times you can put the whole family in the carriage and he wont stir out of his tracks. Flow to Tell the Age of IIorsis. A short time ago we met a gentleman from Illinois, who gave us a piece of information in regard to ascertaining a horse's age, after he or she had passed the ninth year, which was new to us, and will be, we are sure, to most of our readers. It is this : after the horse is nine years old, a wrinkle comes on the eyelids at the upper corner of the lower lid, and every year thereafter he has one well-defined wrinkle for each year over nine. If, for instance, a horse has three wriukles, he is twelve ; if four, thirteen. Add the number of wrinkles to nine, and you will get it. So aays the gentleman ; and he is confindent it will never fail As a good many people have horses over nine, it is easily tried. If true, the horse dentist must gif e up his trade. Field and .Fireside. Watering Newlt Planted Trees. Concerning new planted trees, a writer in the Illinois Prairie Farmer, says : la most cases people commit an error by watering their newly planted trees close to the trunk. Every tree forms a little hill around its trunk to shed the water off, be sides the trunk is protected from surplus rain by the leaves of the crown. This is the reason why, in its natural state, we al ways find the soil round the trunk, partic ularly under it, very dry. Wateriug close to the trunk produces the rotting of the small rootlets which extend from the crown of the root and go downward. This disease grad ually extends, and often produces the death of the tree. If trees have to be watered, it must be done half way between the trunk nd the outer side of the crown. The same principle has to guide manuring. Remedy for White Hairs. The white hairs that appear on horses from the ue or wear of the saddle or harness are often un sightly. My remedy is a very simple one. Take a piece of fresh butter or lard, Urge enough to give the spot a thorough greasing; rub the same with the hand until it besorr.es quite hot, repeating the operation at least three or four times, and the white hairs will soon come out and hairs of natural color take their place. I have tried this on several horses, and never knew it to fail. I think the best time to do it is in the winter, before the new coat starts. Massachwietts Plough man. Ccbe For Warts. The best cautery for warts, corns, etc, is said to be diehloraeetic acid.' It must be applied on the sharp point of a glass stopper made for the pur pose, and great caution ought to be observed not to use too much of it, as it will eat a deep hole into the flesh. One application is frequently sufficient to drive away a w;,rt. The acid smells like vinegar, but is a much more powerful cuastic. It can be had of our best druegist, and sometimes comes put up in bottles with directions for use. Improved Substitute for Washixo Soda. It has been found that the hyposul phate of soda, which is now manufactured very cheaply, for the use of photographers, is much better than the common washing soda to wash delicate articles. It attacks neither the skin of the hands nor the objects to be washed, as does the common soda; and at the same time it is an effective bleaching agent, and takes out many spots better than any other substance. In India when a horse can and will not draw ; instead of whipping, spurring or burning him, as is frequently the practice in more civilized countries, they quietly get a rope and tying it to one of the fore feet, one or two men take hold of it, and advan cing a few paces ahead of the horse, pull their best. To matter how stubborn the animal may be, a few doses of such treat ment efecta a perfect cure. Baked Beans. Soak the bean over night in cold water, and in the morning boil them till they are soft ; then skim taem out into a crock or iron kettle, and put iu the centre a piece of salted pork, (not smok ed), a spoonfull of molasses, a little lump of soda, and boiling water enough to cover them. Bake five or six hours in a hot oven, adding more water as it dries away, but let ting them dry down at last as they are not so good if too wet. Corn Meal PcDDINa.-Boil two quarts of sweet, skimmed milk, and add, while boiling, corn meal enough to make a thin batter ; then sweeten it, and add a half tea spdonfull of ginger and a little talt, mnd bake three hours. More land than ever in New Jerscv is Mr apart this year for the cultivation of the cranberry which seems to be fast becoming the staple of the State. A farmer in Vevay Ind., raises all the materials of clothing on his farm, and with the exception .of shoes, his whoLj outfit is home manufacture.
