The Ladt's Frie.vd. Tht August num
ber of this beautiful monthly is before us,
with a charming steel plate from Sully's
picture of "The Child on the Beach," the
usuai Colored Fashions, a Colored Braiding
Pattern, and a seashore sketch so spirited
that one can almost hear the darh of the
wares and feel the delicious .alt breeze.
The music is a Scotch song "Bonnie An

dress and lady's fancy-work are handsome
as well as useful. The literary matter, t
usual, is fresh and en! ertaining. "Muz

for hard times. Paper flower making will
interest many ladies. Published by Deacon

Struck by Lightximq. During the
thunderstorm, which passed orer Grampi
an lliils oa July 25th, the dwelling house
of Col. James Miller, about half a mile west
of Pennville, was struck by lightning. The
fluid passed down the brick flue, which it
demolished to the garret floor thence down
the stove pipe into the stove, tearing the
pipe Home and burst ng open the doors of
the stove and from thence dowa through
the floor, making a small dark colored aper
ture about six inch s in' front of the stove
heartli. The Colonel, who was standing
within a few feet of the stove at the time,
was partially prostrated, but recovered
himself. Mrs. Miller, and several small
children were in the room at the time, but
ru&tained no injury, further that a "big''
flight.
Tornado. Timber Destk'oyed. One
Of the most torrifie and destructive torna
does, that has visited this county for many
yeans, passed along the head waters and
down Lick Hun, on WeJiiesdiiy last,. July
27th. Between tro and three o'clock in
the afternoon, u tideiily there arose heavy
clouds in the north west, and ioon the
tornado burst forth irf all its poster and fury.
Large bo Jies of very valuable pine timber
were instantly hurled ta the eaith. Trees
of all sizes were uprooted, and in innumer
able instances they, were twisted and tore
into fragments, a if they were mere reeds
or toys. The ro'd was also torn off Mrs.
Mary Shaw's barn. No other buildings
were damaged so far as we have information.
At or near the mouth of Li-k liun, the tor
nado crossed the river into Bradford town
ship, but, having had expended its greatest
fury,' it was contented with uprooting some
app'j trees, etc. The extent of country
djvastated is, on an average, about two
miles in breadth, ami some ten or twelve
miles in length the principal dettuc:io!i
being among the pine timber, and within
the first seven miles of its course. The loss
sustained has not been estimated, but will
reach many thousands oi dollars.
One incident connected with the storm,
is worthy of particular mention. A Mr.
Hancock, had borrowed a wagon to come
to Cle.:rfield, and had just droTe up to his
premises when the storm bunt upon him.
He hurriedly unhitched the horses and put
them in thu stable, when the trees began to
fall all around, and singular to state not one
fell on either his stable or house, but three
fell on the wagon and smashed it to atoms.

Tribute of Eespect. r
At the close of the Goshen M. K. Sunday

unanimously adopted :
Whereas. It has p eaked our Heavenly

beloved sifter, Mary U. Tate, we have lost
an esteemed, and e ver attentive co-laborer,
the church a faithful member and the com

iSVcon, That while we bow with humble
submission to the afflicting dispensation
that has taken our beloved sister from our
midst, we recognize in her removal a loud
call to us individually to be also ready, and
as members of the school to which she be
longed, to work while we may with increased
diligence for the piomotion of the best in
terests of the Sunday School, and to most
devotedly pray, the great head of the school
and church to raise up others to take her
plate.
Tlu'rJ, That we deeply sympathize with
the bereaved family of our deceased sister ;
and we earuestly pray that our Heavenly
Father may grant them the consolations of
