White Daisy in Meadows.
The white daisy is getting to be the pri
rinal rest of our dairy laud.- Unlike tl
thistle (Canada) it thrives in crass landi
deteriorates when much plowed. Hence,
fallow is good for it. But the grass cr
mav be made an advantage over the wh
daisv. Get an early heavy crop of the J u
clover and cut early, and what daisin." niay
be in, will not only be comparatively ot
small amount, but afford good feed .ecoud
only to clover, and preferred even by some
to that plant. Plaster the clover and if
ashes in large quantities arc used, all the
better and there will be another fine crop,
of clover principally the daisies affording
good feed as before.
Here is no loss but, if anything, an ac
tual gain. It is true, we would rather have
the daisies out because they are a weed. Hut
in meadows they aTe cf no harm, particu
larly if cut early. Two crops should be tak
en, and the aftermath will find them harm
less, Orchard grass may take the place of clo
ver with success, as it is as early and grows
as rapidly as the clover. Iut be careful of
the second cuttings, and cut as soon as the
daisies appear. Cut (at each t inie) when all
is in a tender condition, before the grass is
in full blossom, wlien juit getting into
blossom is the time.
In this way the daisy can be kept down
and harmless. In pasture it is different;
here the plow would do well to summer fal
low, the crop of weeds making a good ma
nure bed. This is the best way to treat
nastureland overrun with daisies. JSow
the time to see to these things. F. G. in
Rural New Yorker.
Hiving Bees.
There are few people who understand ex
actly how to manage bees, that is to keep
the worms from the hive, taking honey, Liv
ing them, &C A great many bee owners,
in hiving bees, use a great many different
articles to make the bees remain in the hive;
but I think there is no necessity for any
thing at all; if anything, soraeapijle leaves,
with a little sucar on them, rubbed in the
hive, is about as good, us anything else ; and
when you go to Live the bees, put the hive
under the bees, with one side raised with
two stones so as to let the bees go in. If
they are settled on a low tree, you can bend
the Jimb down and shake them off by the
hive, and they will go up into the hive im
mediately ; if they fail to go in sprinkle a
little water on them ; but if they are in a
large tree, and high, go up the tree and saw
the limb off, bring them down and shake
them by fiie hive. I don't think it necessa
ry to put them in the Liver put t;iem down
by it, for if they will not go in from the
ground, they would not stay in when you
put them in.
I have my Lives sixteen inches high by
twelve square. I put four inch aufcur holes
in the top of the hive, and put a box on- it,
with a glass in one side, so you can see when
it is full. I put over this box, one large
enough to go over the smaller, to keep it
from being exposed to the weather. When
I take the cap or box off, it is full of nice,
white honey, and by usingcaps on my Lives,
I get better hocey, never kill any bees, for
there are but few in the cap, and these I
drive out Cor. Rural Xew Yorker.
Feed thi Frcit Tries. It must be ap
parent to every reflecting person that the
material round about a fruit tree, which ren
ders important aid in the production of fine
fruit of any kind, mutt necessarily be more
or less exhausted after a vine, bush, or tree
has produced abundant crops for several suc
cessive seasons. For example : a large pear
or apple tree will frequently yield from ten
to bixteen thousand annually. Many trees
have produced more twice these quantities
at one crop.
After a few seasons, the materials that the
roots must be supplied with, in order to de-
velope fruit, will be more or less exhausted
For this reason, fruit begins to fail ; and the
failure is often attributed to the eat wind,
or some mysterious atmospheric influence,
when in reality the sole cause is starvation,
arising from an impoverished soil.
The remedy is to feed the roots of all kinds
of fruit trees, with lime, wood ashes, gyp
sum, chip dirt, bones, fishes, and anything
that will renovate an impoverifhed so.l. It
is evident that fruit trees eannot produce
fine fruit out of such materials as may be
desirable for some other purposes.
Deep plowing has its earnest advocates,
yet they have not as yet convinced the great
mass of farmers of its utility. It would ap
pear the better way to upturn no deeper than
we are able to enrich. If the subsoil can
be stirred without being thrown too much
to the surface, and at moderate cost, it is
good policy to do so.
i CJ a
"June is the time to prune fruit trees.
Limbs taken off at this season wilt begin im
mediately to send out a ring of new wood,
just where it is needed, aaid will thereby
protect itself m the soonest possible period
from external harm." So states E. D.
Wight, in the Genesee Farmer.
An exchange says persons who use kero
sene lamps will be glad to know that if the
wicks are soaked in strong vinegar twenty
four hours and thoroughly dried before in
serted, all smoke will be avoided, the wicks
will last twice as long, and increased bril
liant light will be obtained.
One pound of Copperas dissolved in six
gallons of water aDd sprinkled on the leaves,
is sure death to the currant worm, which
Inflicts such ravages on the currant bush.
It kills not by contact with the worm but by
poisoning the food, so they die in a few hours.
More tools rust and rot than wear out.
Never allow farming utensils to lie out of
doors when not in use. The sun, rain and
dew will injure them as much as constant
use. Never cse all out doors for a carriage
house.
Spend one day each year setting trees by
l,o t :n i i.
the road side. It will be a pleasant
mcnt, and posterity will bless you.
